Drop in FTP & vDot: use old or new numbers?

4 wks of IM recovery and 3 wks of sickness seem to have wrecked my FTP and vDot scores.  I'm confident I will eventually get back and improve on my pre-IM scores during the OS but in the meantime should I use my old (faster) scores in the OS or start over with these new (slower) scores?

To further complicate matters, normally there's 20-30 pt differential btw my indoor & outdoor FTP.  Moving back to the trainer automatically dropped my FTP, despite the loss of fitness.  Nevertheless, should I attempt to do my workouts at the old outdoor FTP or just start over?

Thanks.

  • Mac, work out to what you tested to. Test again in a few weeks if you start to think its too easy.
  • Definitely start out w/ recently tested values especially if you are now indoors. Hate to burn out in December! You'll soon be able to tell if you need to retest.

  • Bummed....but it makes sense.  Thanks for the input.  Psychologically it gets to me:  it takes so long to build up fitness, but it can be lost in a fraction of the time.  Hoping by the new year I'm back to where I was a few months ago.

  • No worries Mac.... I had four months off last winter with injury, cancer, treatments, etc..... and when back at it in the spring, in only 2 months had same FTP as heading into IMLP year before.
  • x2 what Trent said. Today's sadness is a distant memory 8 weeks from now when you are killing it. Better that than over-reaching now only to find out that you have put yourself right back into another training hole...
  • @Mac- thanks for asking the question. I knew in my head that I should be using my recently tested numbers, but couldn't bring myself to lower the standards. Guess I'll have to adjust my joule.
  • Thanks, all.  Yikes...Trent, after what you said, I have NO excuses!

Exactly.  I think you'll find that the de-training and rest will serve you well when you ramp back up.  By the end of the OS you'll be ahead of where you were in 2011.
