Learning How to Pace an IM Marathon

  • I'm late to this party but if I leave T2 feeling like I'm working at all or pushing the pace I'm running way too fast. I could easily run the first 8-10 miles sub 7:15 pace. It feels pretty good to be running and off the stupid bike after being diligent about being in the aero bars 112 miles.
If I start to feel like hell I back it off a touch, 10 seconds per mile slower over the course of 12 miles is only two minutes. That doesn't look so bad. Walking one bad mile takes 17-18 minutes. I like the trade off.
Mentally, I am a big believer in the fact that I pay thousands of dollars, spend hundreds of hours, and sometimes make myself miserable doing this stuff. I had better be having some fun out there. If I'm not laughing, joking around, and giving good vibes to spectators and fellow competitors; why in the hell do this. It is supposed to be fun.
