Meniscus injury
Well folks just got back from an appointment with sports Doc he suspects that the posterior knee pain I've been having is from a meniscus injury. MRI in 2 weeks possible surgery to follow. He indicated that it was ok to swim and bike but no running. Wanted to start some activity and was goining to load up the Pre-season plan. Thinking of changeing the run workouts for swimming focused on techneque. Anyway was wondering if anyone elese has gone through menscuis issues?

@Dewey Sorry to hear but wish you well. I've never dealt w/ your issue personally but my wife who has her doctorate in PT says "if it doesn't hurt swimming, its probably ok". Hope that helps in some small way.
Hi Dewey,
I had a torn medial meniscis for over a year after a bike/car accident (I was on the bike). I was never able to squat down on that leg without pain. I thought the leg would recover over time, but it did not. During that year, i did two IM. Over the course of the year, the pain got worse - not just when squating down on the leg, but when running. Biking was fine. I had it looked at in Oct. and MRIed. I am 5 weeks out from surgery. 30% of the meniscus was removed. I was off crutches after a week. I can bike, swim and elliptical now. It is still weak. Hoping to start running Jan 1st.
The take a way is: biking was fine for me. If it does not hurt do it.
A torn meniscis prevents the meniscus from functioning properly. There is no PT to fix it.
All the best,
jim
@Dewey She says if biking doesn't hurt, should be ok. Don't push it if it hurts!!!
JB tell your wife thanks for the info. Won't push it for sure. You know whats funny is that now that I know what is likely wrong with my knee it hurts a lot less.
Bob. I can only hope that mine is a lateral tear and no surgery will be needed.
No prob Dewey, glad to help and hope you get better ASAP
Dewey,
Well no surgery is good news. Hopefully the rehab works out. Don't worry about the time line at this point 20 weeks will be enough to get you across the finish line. You will miss the OS speed work but honestly if you focus on the weight goal the time will come down significantly.
My first IM in Lake Placid 2004 I had issues with my foot and gave up running until 6 or so weeks out. I was able to do some walking and even got in a few 2.5 hour walks prior to picking up the running again. My longest run prior to the IM was 6-8 miles, which is about what I ran on race day. I finished with a 16 hour IM on LSD training. So if the knee holds up you can finish and come through the injury and still finish the race.
Good luck with the recovery.
Gordon
@Dewey, +1 on no surgery being a good thing. I have some clicking going on in mine since surgery. The rehab will be a good thing. as long you get a good terrorist, err therapist... A good one can zero right in on the problem have have you progressing quickly. I had one that I was worse off seeing her, than before I went there. It all depends on your injury!
Sending healing thoughts your way.
