2012 Race Selection

I'm looking into finalizing my schedule for the 2012 season. I see lots of threads related to choosing races, but didn't see anyone address the races I'm looking into, so I thought I would throw my hat into the mix. I'm in the NOS, ending 3/18. Looking at possibly doing the Patriot HM 6/16 and Rev3 OOB HIM 8/26.  Patriot would be exactly 12 weeks out from the end of my OS.  Any thoughts from those who have done this race before?

I am looking into Patriot because of timing and other commitments this summer and still wanting to get two HIMs in. I am a bit hesitant to do a race earlier in the season when I may not be able to get out on the roads consistently in Eastern Maine until mid to late April to bike. I have also toyed with the idea of Rhode Island 70.3 in mid-July, but haven't heard great feedback on the course.  Any thoughts?

Rev3 OOB is pretty much a lock and is my "A" race. I'm psyched to do a local race and try an ocean swim. The above taken into consideration, apart from wanting to do 2 races this season, would it be more beneficial to stay in the OS longer rather than race the start the training plan all over again for another 10ish weeks?

A third option is to do a local sprint in early June instead of another half. Not as exciting, but given other commitments, I might be content with for this year.

Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks!

  • Patriot would be perfect, I think it would allow you to get in 2 weeks of off/down/light training time, then 10 weeks of the HIM plan...It's not a hilly course so relatively easy to transition your fitness over!
  • Thanks for the input, Coach! I think I'll stick with Patriot and OOB...it'll be nice to have something concrete to be working towards in the long, dark winter!
