Post Ironman Down Time

So I am about 1 month post IMAZ and I have no mojo to do anything still. I have done a few runs and 2 trainer ride one 30 mins one 40 minutes but its all been like someone has been holding a gun to my head. I know everyone is different but was wondering about how long before some mojo comes back to want to workout, not really train but just go out and run. bike or swim.

Thanks

  • In the past for me (I've done 8 of the stupid things), its been much longer than I would like. 3-months has not been uncommon. I would suggest trying to really mix things up a bit here in the OS and have some fun. I like cross-country skiing and play squash 1-2x/week. Squash particularly is nice because its a totally different mindset than endurance sports, social, and still a good workout. After my last IM in 2009, its taken 2-years for me to really feel like I wanted to hit things hard again.
  •  I'm in the same boat, 4 weeks after IM AZ. I've found that the only thing which gets my off my duff is a goal activity. Right now, that's ski weeks in Jan and Feb, meaning I have to lift weights to get my quads tough enough. And my self-imposed "50 miles in 50 days" swim challenge to regain my swim strength. Although I won't make the 50 miles, it does serve to get me out of the house (like now, @ 0630) to go to the pool for 40 minutes. If I just relied on my next big race, I wouldn't b e doing anytnhing until my personal OS starts about Feb 15.

I think ya gotta pick something, be it a 5K or a local century, in the future and say, "I need to be ready for that." Maintainence training, to me, is a non-sequiter. I have to have something to shoot for.

  • I like the idea of mixing it up post-big race like an Ironman. Do some stuff that's fun, things you didn't have time for during IM training. Take a Yoga class or go for hikes or snowshoeing or whatever floats your boat. When you feel like starting to hit workouts hard again, you'll know it's time to pick a new race and start training.

  • I'm in the same boat. Barely done ANYthing since AZ. Been on the bike a few times inside, and a few times outside. Ran a few times too, but no more than 4 miles.

Hopefully I'll get off my arse today and ride outside in the ~55degree sun here in Dallas, before I'm bike-free for the next 10 days for xmas and new years vacation. Hopefully I'll be running in NorCal and London. Plus, I'll be walking a lot doing the tourist thing in London.
  • I am not sure, but I think end of season IMs are harder to recover from b/c:

1 - you have trained a long a$$ time for it; and
2 - there ain't much going on right now in the tri world

Listening to your mojo isn't a bad thing...but eating your way to a 15-lb surplus is!!! So instead, stay fit doing some fun stuff. I am drag racing some local tri geeks on Sundays and then handing out for coffee afterwards...just trying to keep it fun!
  • Coach P your right about the end of the season race, I am looking for some fun stuff to do but its hard as the people I train with all did IMAZA too so its like a group lull.

I have been hitting the gym to lift some iron and that has been fun, maybe me and you can do a little bench press competition
