FTP swag help

I was doing an ok job of doing the Nov OS until about 12/7, then I got caught up in work, grad classes, basketball coaching, etc.  It's been to the point of 1-2 workouts per week plus a game of basketball.  Prior to that I was inconsistent on the run, but doing every bike.  So today, I decided to semi-reset and start with a testing week.  I'll then jump into week 9 OS, with a bike hack as I'm just having more difficulty with the run due to scheduling.

So, my Nov. OS FTP start was 212 watts.  I thought I'd start there and see what happened.  I didn't really look at the dial, except for an occasional glance.  The watts just kept climbing and I never really felt tired, so the two intervals are very off.  At the end I was focused on turning over the pedals, but definitely could have held it for another 2 minutes if Rich had the gun at my head.  Any thoughts on the swag or just stick with the 241?  Here is what it looks like:

  • I say stick to new FTP as you will know very quickly if you can hold the watts. Also given your statement that you could of kept going says you are just about dead on.

  • 212>>242 in six weeks sounds pretty good to me.

  • No SWAG needed you earned a 241 , good / great work !!!
  • Agree you earned this # and it'll soon be obvious if it is a tad low but that beats even a bit too high...

  • @Keith,
I'm not really sure what you are asking. It looks like you tested by the numbers above, 2x20'(2'), but then you mention holding for another 2' if you had to. Are the numbers real above? So are you concerned your number is too high or low?
  • @ Tucker- I'm not sure what I'm really asking for. Typically when I test my first and second intervals are within 5 watts of each other and I'm confident that the number is all that I had. I feel I'm pretty good at testing and know within 3 minutes of the second interval when I've f'ed up a test, which only happens maybe once a year when I'm inside (and I'm inside from Oct. to mid-May). I'm partially confused by the fact that the number jumped that much overall and that the second interval was massively different from the first. I also feel I've could have kept the second interval going. I've had a 20 watt jump before coming off a complete layoff prior to the first test, but something about this feels different. In some ways I feel stronger than the number based on the fact I could have held #2 longer, but I'm also very concerned about the 30 watt jump as that seems like it's too much for a 6-8 week period.

I'm also thinking that I shouldn't see these numbers since I've never seen this during the last 5 years I've done the EN OS. I'm also hopeful that this is the jump I've never had, which is coming off of my first IM year where I felt my bike strength for 80-85% increased in terms of being able to hold it for long durations (4 hrs. vs a past of 2 hrs).

That's where my head is at, which maybe logical or completely off base.
  •  @Keith,  +1 on sticking with the new FTP.  You earned it.  Maybe the break did you good.

  • Keith, go with 245, and have fun with the new pain in the intervals! ;-)
  • @Keith, I agree with everyone else, go with the 245. You'll know soon enough if they are correct. Also I'm assuming everything was calibrated/zeroed?

As for the jump, I'm thinking it is possible. You said you weren't looking at the watts, maybe you have been holding yourself back.
  • Keith,

Could you have had callibration issues with the power meter?  If not the 241 or 245 is legitmate.

What was your previous high FTP last year?  Did you take more time off prior to the OS this year and get more watts back in the first 8 weeks?  Other than a break through year I've got nothing else.

  • I am new to power and a little confused. What does swag mean?
  • @Dina — S(cientific) W(ise) A(ssed) G(uess), swag
  • I didn't know what it meant first time I saw it either!

  • Alternatively: Scientific Wild Ass Guess. (These discussion seems like trying to decipher song lyrics.)
  • Seemingly Warranted Adjustment Gross-up
  • Hahaha! I love it. In business it means free junk.... Promotional items.... I like this definition better....
