Computer with WKO crapping out

Looking for recommendation to replace current way I have been analyzing power.  My primary computer is a Mac, but have been using an old Window laptop to run WKO.  It is very close to the end of its life and is not worth the frustration.

A race for next year is IMTX.  After that I start an ER residency program and will not have time to train for long course events.  So only planning on tracking data from now until May.  I have read the Mac options in the Wiki.  Leaning towards paying for a TP premium account.  My mac is a couple years old and do not want to spend the extra money for upgrades to run windows.

What I read is the online version cannot analyze segments of power files.  how does this affect calculating our FTP test?  Maybe I have been doing this the hard way, but always include my warm up as the first lap of the test.  Then use laps 2, 3, 4 for the required timed sections.  Then just highlight these laps in WKO to get my NP.

Not tech savvy so please be patient.

  • @Shawn:

The online version of TrainingPeaks (verified on both Windows 7 and Mac OSX)) does allow you to select portions of a ride file, and it will show you the NP, etc. for those selected sections. However, you can't save the interval, so you'll have to re-select it every time you want to view the file.

Warm up should not be lap 1 of the test. For the test, you should warm up first, then do 20 min as hard as you can. Rest 2 minutes by spinning at about 70% of your current FTP and then do another 20 min as hard as you can. When you upload to WKO or TrainingPeaks, you highlight the 42 minutes consisting of the first 20 minute interval, the 2 minutes of rest and the second 20 minute interval. Your NP during that 42 minute block should be roughly your FTP.

    Example:

My last test was a 20 min interval at 317 watts, followed by 2 minutes at 220 watts and then another 20 minutes at 315 watts. My NP for the entire 42 minute block was 313 (which I rounded to 315 W).
  • Can't comment on WKO/MAC issues but giving up long course b/c of a measly residency??? WTH? You ER reisdents have the life of Riley with your shifts! LOL

J/K Where are you in school? Where is residency? I went to MCG in Augusta for med school and did residency in COlumbia, SC and stayed.

  • @steve....thanks for the info. I calculate my FTP the same way. Just picky about logging all miles so like to include the WU for historical purposes.

Jeff....I am a PA in the Army. Did my schooling in the Army Program sponsored by Nebraska. We have an Ortho and ER doctorate of science program sponsored by Baylor. I am doing mine at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. June 1sr starts my 18 month stretch of getting kicked in the junk!! Can't Wait!!! I just love 14 hour days; one written test a month cover 20ish chapters in Tintinalli's; oh and research!! So yes looking forward to shift work and no follow up once finished. Let me guess you are Ortho or are you an Internal med big head?
  • @Shawn Good stuff. I did my OB/GYN rotation at Eisenhower and Ft Gordon in Augusta while at MCG. Now I do geriatrics which leaves me ample time to TRAIN!

Good luck and hang in there!

  • Shawn,

try Golden Cheetah first. It's free and works on the mac. You can import all your WKO files so you'll have full history. It' s really designed as a cycling program but you can do running and swimming also. It's almost as good as WKO, but not quite. They are in the process of upgrading from version 2.0 to 3.0. Version 2.0 has all it's own vocabulary that is similar to Training Peaks, but not the same, so you don't have TSS, normalized power, etc. Similar, but not the same. Version 3.0 will have the WKO jargon.

I'm trying hard to get rid of my old PC but still have Quicken and WKO on it. I currently have a paid TP account which is good and I have been thinking about dropping WKO for Golden Cheetah. I've got too much analysis with WKO, TP and Golden Cheetah. It's hard to keep them sync'd and I just need to pick one!

My guess is that WKO will go away in the future and be relaxed by the paid TP.

I've used Parallel's for Mac but could never get it to recognize a lot of my sports equipment and gave up in frustration. I know a lot of people have been happy with it.
  • Jeff...I like where your head is at. I will retire from the Army in 6 years. That will put me over 24 years total. I plan to work as little as possible. Just enough to support the habit and whatever the kids need. I am 38yo now and have given myself a goal to KQ by age 50.

Tom...thanks for the info. Will probably pay for the TP account out of laziness. My wife is 38 weeks pregnant so I know I won't spend the time to get familiar with Golden Cheetah. I will check it out though.
  • Retired at 44?!? I like where your head it at! That's awesome! Try to get assigned to Columbia after residency and we'll do some nice training while the other guys are at WORK!
