Adding Aero Bars to Road Bike

I am entering my second year of triathlons (Sprint and Olympics for now), and am debating on whether I should add aero bars to my road bike.  I purchased a set of Profile T1+ Aero Bars last year, but decided not to use them until I put more miles on my bike.  Now entering Season 2, I am debating on whether I should stick to no Aero Bars or install the Aero Bars and maybe get refitted on my bike.

Any input is much appreciated.

  • absolutely put them on. Big improvement in aerodynamics, which leads to a big improvement in speed and comfort.

Consider also adding a forward seatpost, to help get into a position where your hip angle isn't too tight at the top of the pedal stroke.
  • I would definitely put the aerobars on your road bike. I think you will find that after a very short time of using them that it is more comfortable than being in the drops. Over time, you can lower your bars to get more aggressive and like Mike said at a minimum move your seat all the way forward on their rails.

There is also a thread in the forums called something like "critique my fit". If you take some pictures of your setup on the bike and post them their, you will likely get some more thorough feedback.
  • And get professional fit with the bars.

  • If you're doing all the work, you want every one of those hard-earned watts to turn into speed. Aero bars on your road bike (combined with a proper fitting), an aero helmet and disc wheel cover are all low-cost and high "bang for your buck" ways to make sure your watts don't escape into the wild blue yonder and rather translate into speed. You work too hard to let the watts escape!!!
