training week. big island. april 1-8
So far two of us will be in the Waikaloa area this week. Terry Olivas is racing Lavaman to start the week. I had this week off already and decided to go for warm training.
Waikoloa is a little north of Kona. Right off the Queen Kaahumanu highway. I believe Terry is staying near the Ocean with the Lavaman race. I'm a couple miles upcountry (Mauka direction). Paniolo Greens at Waikoloa (golfing cowboys).
Neither of us have room to rent.
So maybe we can get a group of ENers together for the week.

Jenn. Three weeks must be nice.
So a few of us so far. Maybe i'll do my first hundred miles while you folks are racing.
I will miss you there by a month or two. Heading there after 70.3 KS, June 11 for 10 days of training, have a timeshare in Waikaloa.
And I'll be there Feb 24-Mar 1. Maybe I'll write "EN Rocks" in white rocks on the road somewhere - say going down hill on the mauka side from "scenic view" rest stop on the Queen K?
See you there Al.
Do I get the top or bottom bunk?
Lynne
See you there Lynne. would like to do the 70.3 again some day.

Have a good lavaman.
Will ride long while you are doing that.

Robin
Aloha! Thanks Robin! Be safe out there... windy!!! 206.669.0242
How about epic climbing day one day. Up towards mauna kea suumit. I am at 1000 ft. Paniolo Greens in Waikaoloa Village. Mauna Kea visitor center at 9000 some ft. 43 miles one way for me. But maybe we could do just 4000-7000 ft climbing. I could coast down to you to start at sea level. Would have to have great brakes for the ride down.
So DNF'd Lavaman today after the bike. Cut my foot on a rock walking into the swim start area. Didn't realize how bad it was until after I dismounted my bike. Horrible pain. Blood everywhere. Could not run. Check it out.
So needless to say I just punched a huge hole in my training plans with this. So I am not riding tomorrow. I might ride Tuesday depending on how it looks/feels, but i can't afford to mess it up any more. As it is, I don't see myself running for at least 2-3 weeks with as much skin as was lost.
I will keep everyone posted.
Oh my gosh Terry! So sorry to see that! It was great to meet you this AM, but sure wish you'd had better luck today! I actually started walking out tho the start and hit rocks when I was about knee deep so I just swam out hopinng to avoid exactly what happened to you. Looks like it needs stitches?!? Bummer!
Re: riding this week. I'm open to ideas. I'll probably try to get an IMWC course ride in. I really like the wide shoulders on the Queen K and this gal has been on a trainer for faaarrrr to long ot not take advantage!
Big sorry terry. Good luck with healing.
Did a 90 miler yesterday past Hawi to the dead end at Pololu valley. Really neat.
Up to Waimea today.
Maybe slack key guitar music at Mauna kea beach hotel copper bar tonight.
Aloha!
IMWC tomorrow, Wednesday. Intending to leave from the Mauna Lani entrance at about 9:00 AM, but I'm open to other arrangements as well. I'm hoping we are comprable speeds (I biked 1:05 at Lavaman if that helps) but assuming we are at least close we could do this as no drop or at a minimum pick some specific regroup points to leverage safety in numbers. Mauna Lani > Hawi > Kona > Mauna Lani > Woo Hoo!
Call/text if you're interested in joining us!

You guys are killing me!
Thanks jenn but going to take a bike day off.
Cooked from 100 today. Did what you will be doing but in reverse order. The 6 miles at the end up to waikoloa village was a treat. Hoter today.
50 miles yesterday up Saddle road between Mauna kea and mauna loa. 5000ft in 25 miles. Neat up country. Ironwood and eucalyptus trees and cow country. . Scary ride back down in rain and hail on bumpy road. Almost kept going to Hilo. would be about 75 miles. Stay in hilo then back over the next day. Someday.
The micro climates are fun.
Anyone up for early morning swim in A Bay tomorrow befor your ride? Or swim wherever.
Terry how is foot?
Al anything else i can say to make you envious?
Ride 26 miles into Kona
Breakfast at Lava Java
Swim 1.24 miles in Kailua Bay with brutal waves and currents
Lunch at Kona Brewing Company
24 mile ride back to Waikoloa
May not have been epic, but what a great day.
Hoping to keep my poorly trained ass within the same zip code as Jenn on our century tomorrow. We'll miss you Robin.
As for my hoof, it's healing but still hurts like hell to walk on. Held up OK on ride today.
I couldn't agree more. I've been silently monitoring this thread with quite a bit of jealousy and except for Terry's foot, it's just so painful to read about what all of you are doing.
ENJOY!
Yes connected up with terry for a bit and jenn for longer on the road. Nice to meet them. 380 miles for the week. Most miles on ironman course but some interesting other rides and found other rides to do in the future. Some great climbing options with low traffic. And bonus four ocean swims 30-60 minutes each. Few days rest then jump into 11 weeks until idaho.
My wife & I were in Kona last week. I have no idea how you guys were cycling! The wind was literally moving our car (and others) in/out of our lanes. We only saw one cyclist...poor dude was sitting on the side of the road next to the 'a'a lava flow (possibly blown off his ride?). How were you guys wind-proofing your bikes
