Base layer under jersey?

I just discovered a base layer under my jersey and I love it.  I have been using craft brand so far and am impressed. Even on a warm day, the mesh base layer feels real comfy. Does any one have any other experience or recommendations?

  • Craft is some of the best stuff out there. Base layers are awesome, they can help you dial in almost any run / workout into a manageable experience. Or make a manageable one unbearably hot for Kona, etc.
  • I've used the Craft extralight base layer for years, and through the hottest days of the summer, all the time.

Remember: its purpose is as a cooling / wicking garment, not insulation.

I think it runs about $20 at PBK.
  • Interesting, never realized that base layers could be used on warm days as well. On particularly cold mornings, I sometimes put on a layer of Underarmour underneath my jersey. I'll have to give the base layers a try, since I seem to have a lot of trouble getting myself out on morning rides if I'm not sufficiently warm and cozy.
  • My layering is:

    • DriFit running shirt
    • Jersey
    • Armwarmers
    • Vest
    • Leg warmers
    • Top caps
    • Glover liners.
    • Beanie for descents

So I can go from all of ^that^ above to bibs, jersey, and gloves in one quick stop.

  • Base layers are requirements for any outdoor bike ride for me, regardless of the heat. Seems counterintuitive, but they work (all the pro peleton can't be wrong, can they?). I typically use whatever sleeveless version is on sale on the usual online stores whenever I need to reload. (currently wearing generic performance brand) Also, they help protect against bib strap rub on longer rides.

But if you wear a base layer on hot rides, then the viewers at home don't get the full glorious effect of your mushroom farmer tan, 2% BF, and swinging patron saint medal when you fully unzip your jersey on the climbs...just sayin...
