This is the most comprehensive primary study that I am aware of. As stated in previous posts, this is a "near the end of race" phenomenon, with 2/3rds of the events occuring in the last quarter of the race. The case fatality rate was 71%, and the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was the most common pathology. Although they only reviewed 31 of 59 medical histories/records, this must have been a huge task, approached with much sensitivity.
