Run/Bike Blocks

Does anyone feel that there are gains to be had in another dicipline when focused on either a big bike or run block?

I'm asking the question because i've been focused on running for most of the OS using the marathon hack and just completed my first 50k. My running/VDOT is through the roof, but boy do i need to spend some time catching up on the bike.

I'm wondering if the same would be true if i was doing a big bike block. Anyone feel that one is more "transferrable" than another?

  • Congrats Henry on doing the 50K!! Sorry, no help on your question tho....
  • Ditto, congratulations on completing the 50K. I have a hard enough time completing a marathon, ha ha.

I never spent any serious time on the bike before joining EN and starting in the November OS. I was a little concerned that my running would suffer as a result of splitting time between the bike and run (and actually spending more time on the bike). But...I've found out that my running has improved and is stronger than ever. I don't think it would work the other way around for me, but I can't say for certain because I've never tried it.
  • Coach Rich had some excellent posts late in 2011 about the value of "single sport blocks" to improve significantly within a given discipline. No real chance of cross disciplinary improvements (unless body comp changes help or you were really unfit to begin with).
  • Thanks for the feedback. Now to get caught up on the bike!
