Rev3 or Mooseman?

I will be doing IMLP in July, so was going to do a 70.3 the week before the IM USA camp the second week of June. I'm torn, however. Trying to decide between Rev3 or Mooseman that first weekend in June.

Haven't done either of these races yet, and would love some input. I will say, I'm leaning toward Mooseman because Timberman is my favorite 70.3. But...I've never participated in a Rev3 event, so I know little of that race experience.

Any and all advice would be most appreciated.

  • Not sure about REV3 but they get good reviews. Was looking to do a REV3 race soon, girlfriend is doing REV3 OOB but too close to IMMT for me. Eyeing a couple later REV3 events though. IMO Mooseman is much better than Timberman although water and air temps can be cold and the bike is challenging. At least 3 EN members are doing Mooseman OLY/HIM combo.
  • I did Quassy last year before IMLP. I enjoyed the race and will do it again this year. It was well run. Im also going to IMLP camp as i usually go up that weekend anyway.. Im not doing IMLP this year though 4 years in a row and I needed a break.
  • Personally, I don't care for Mooseman for two reasons.

    1) water is STUPID-cold!!! Last time I did it (just the Oly), the water was 55 degrees, and I couldn't bring myself to even dip a toe in the water, despite a huge delay at the swim start. The shock of the cold really never wore off.

    2) the bike course includes a ridiculous-steep hill, which you get the privilege of riding twice. I've done it on a training ride, and have absolutely zero desire to see how slow I'd be going at HIM goal watts. True test of execution. Two years ago, I put the course map of Mooseman against the course map of IMLP (both to the same scale), and the Mooseman course is so much steeper. If it had been more similar, I might have said to do it to get ready for placid, but I think it's just the kind of course that's difficult not to destroy yourself on.

Those two factors plus all of the good things I've heard about the Rev3 races would lead me to pick Quassy.
  • I have never done quassy but will be this year. I did REV3 Knoxville last year and it was very well run. My overall experience was that I loved it. It is definitely about the athletes and not the money. I would recommend quassy.
  • While I have enjoyed the race for two years running (HIM - it was my first HIM) but ....I would give a +1 to what Mike said...I love the venue..but the water temps can be ridiculous...and the bike course is bearish (I have had many people better than I say it is tougher than IMLP course)...I'm skipping it this year (Prepping for Louisville IM) and doing RI 70.3 again in July (cuz Eagleman is sold out...though I am waitlisted)....

Not suggesting definitely skip it...but saying understand the course challenges and how it might fit your plan, goals, and expectation.

    Just IMO.

  • I would say no to the Moose b/c transition is usually full of water to boot. In 2007 I got out of the water and fell over twice in transition I was literally dizzy from the cold. Plus it appears all the kids are going REV baby!
  • I would have to say Mooseman this year and then Quassy next year. Well, at least that is my plan. Did the Moose back in 2008. Yes, it's hilly, but it's still only 56 and not 112. The devil hill is a short steep pop, but then it's done.
  • OK you bunch of skirts I'll chime in again! Just kidding LOL I am an absolute freeze baby racing at a whopping 120lbs 5% BF I freeze all the time. I have done Mooseman last 3 years and find the water to be no big deal . The bike can be cold and I learned my lesson 2 years ago when it rained(suffered bad on the bike). Take the time to put on some clothes in transition. As for the hills... you go up the DEVIL HILL on the OLY and down the DEVIL HILL on the HIM new course. The hills that are on the HIM make DEVIL HILL look like CHILDSPLAY and you do them twice. I still think this race is 10 times better than Timberman although WTC is well on there way to ruining it. Last year I ate with some people from CT afterwards and they said they were happy they came up to do it rather than the one in CT. I'm local in Laconia on Lake Winnisquam about 30 minutes from Mooseman. I start swimming in Winnisquam(same temps as Newfound) mid May with no problems. I will be doing the OLY/HIM combined , will probably have pasta dinners at my house , and have plenty o floors space if anyone needs it!
  • Last year I did Quassy, the Lake Placid camp, and IMLP. Worked out great. Quassy is a great race and I'm doing it again this year. It's pretty hilly on both the bike and run for lager guys like myself, but still a great race.
  • I quassy last year, but Moose this year just to switch things up. Both will be good practice for LP. Choose the one that's closest?
  • I have opted to do the EN LP Training camp one week later instead of the Moose, figure that is a better prep for IMMT
