How long do you take off with a head cold...

So Tuesday I started getting a sore throat, so I thought I'd still get in my bike.  Got in the ride, but woke up Wednesday feeling like I got hit by a car.  Headache, throat, congestion, ear pain...you name it.  So, I didn't do my VO2 run yesterday and won't do my bike today either...feeling worse today then yesterday.  So how long do you all typically wait to start up again? I am in week 12 of the Nov OS and already feeling bad about missing 2 workouts...but also feel pretty weak and achy.  Thanks for any input...

  • Lauren,

My personal rules are to do the volume and leave out the intensity if no fever. If I have a fever and/or it moves to my chest, I leave it out altogether until I get better......hope this helpful and get well soon!
  • Same rule for me.

Same head cold as a matter of fact too!  Taking a couple days off.

  • I'll usually start a workout if I don't have a fever, but bag it if I feel like garbage after 20 or so minutes. Sometimes I feel better once I get going so its usually worth trying, but if not, I'll quit. I hope you feel better soon!
  • had this a few weeks ago. I took 3 days off because I felt so crappy. Then I said I'd try the bike and like Sarah said, I felt better after I got going. Most important thing is to get better!
  • Be careful, though. I started the year with a cold that took until Jan 14 to be gone. Got back into the workouts and woke up Tuesday this week (1/24) and it was back. I have been sick more days than well this year. Still feel like crap and really want to get back into training.
  • I tried last year to hit the bike intervals with a cold and it just didn't happen. I would skip workouts altogether, unless you are going stir-crazy and have to get one in. In that case, do volume/drill as mentioned above. Wishing you a speedy recovery Lauren.
  • As a physician, I generally recommend doing the workout volume w/o the intensity if you are sick but symptoms are ABOVE the neck and skipping the workout altogether if any are BELOW the neck. Use common sense and stay well hydrated and don't push yourself this far away from your A race. It is January after all.

    Feel better soon!

  • And note this is your body saying that you need to get some serious rest! Please make sure you are sleeping 8 hours, staying hydrated, etc....good luck!
