  • This will be my third or fourth year doing it. Good race. The April 1st date should help a bit with the weather because the previous couple of years (late-April and mid-April) had temps in the mid-80's. Regardless, it's going to be extremely warm for you coming from WNY.

I hope you have a wind tunnel to train in. Galveston is really windy, especially that time of year. You can bank on 15-20 mph sustained winds with gusts twice that. The bike is more or less a 28 mile out and back. The first half goes southwest and the return trip is northeast. Headwinds will play a major role the first half of the ride. Winds will be coming from some southernly direction. Last year was SSW which meant for a real slow ride going out. I think my splits were like 1:24 (20 mph) and 1:08 (24+ mph). 2010 the winds were from the S which meant some headwind but real tough crosswinds for the whole ride.

  • Sounds like fun Bob!
  • I know every nook and cranny of that course so let me know if you have any questions.
  • Excellent, I'm sure I'll take you up on that as we get closer to race date! I can't believe its just us two. I thought more folks were in on this one?
  • I'm still on the fence. I have a room booked at the lovely BeachComber Inn. I've done the race many times before, all before it was an 'official' 70.3. Even one time as the "Texas two step" (sprint on Saturday and HIM on Sunday).

Bob is totally right, guaranteed wind on the bike. In my experience, it's not always from the same direction year-by-year. One year it was a headwind out, and the next it was a tailwind out...really frustrating. Regardless, it's a pretty fast bike course, very flat with only a few inclines.

It'll at bare minimum be somewhat-humid, if not warm to boot.
  • Definitely come join the fun Scott. Sounds like the two of you can school me on the course!
