lake placid bike course roads

Has anyone heard how the roads are doing on the bike course after the big floods there?

  • Everything is open to the best of my knowledge right now. Winter has been mostly a no show this year so major frost heaves shouldn't be too much of a problem. I don't know what NYDOT has planned for the spring in terms of repairs/upgrades. I know that a culvert washed out during the floods between Wilmington and LP. It was fixed, but don't know whether it was a permanent fix or temporary with plans to do the permanent this spring. If they do a full on replacement they would have to close the highway again which could impact training. All in all though, I'm sure the course will be open come race day.
  • I was just up in Lake Placid the past week. It was somewhat snowy, with sand an salt on the roads, so it was hard to say for sure what their condition was. But I would say Rt. 73 (the road from Keene to Placid, and where the big downhill is) was pretty much the same as last summer. That's not bad considering it was breached and destroyed in five locations from Hurricane Irene. River Road (run course) also took a beating in that storm, with the pavement completely washed away in places. I did not drive that way last week but I believe it has been repaired.

In general much of the bike course was and still is in marginal shape. Hopefully some funds will eventually be found for a major re-paving, which is needed.
