Charity Race/Event

I may have mentioned this before, but I volunteer for a Search and Rescue team based in central New Jersey. The name of the group is Central Jersey Technical Rescue. The team is totally volunteer based so we are very dependent on fund-rasing to cover our costs. As a group that provides services that you hope you don't need, it is very tough to rasie money.

I have been toying with the idea of holding a charity bicycle and/or run event. I am wondering if anyone in the Haus has done something like this before. I could use some pointers and tips on how to make something like this fly. I have been doing some readng on what it is like to be a race director and it doesn't sound easy!
