How long have you been tri-ing? My first tri was in 2010, so not very long compared to most EN-ers.
What got you started in tri's? I thought it would be more fun then just running...which is true!
What distances have you done? Fave distance? Olympic and HIM. I've never done a sprint and never done an Ironman. One day I'd like to do an ironman but truthfully I don't have the time to fully commit to the training, and I'm not sure how fun it would really be. I look at it as more of a bucket list thing than something I'm really excited about doing. I really like the olympic distance...that is a RACE. The HIM is fun too but honestly the training is a bit of a grind sometime.
Strongest discipline? Weakest? Favorite? Run/bike I am both pretty good. In my HIM races my run has been better, statistics-wise, than my bike, which is strange since I've always viewed myself as underperforming those runs. In olympic distance races last year my bike was stronger than my run, but they were close. My swim is really very bad.
Strength training? How/when? No, but I probably should, I'm sure...
I'm nosey today, huh? Yes, but it is good to get to know your teammates a bit better, I think.
Not too Nosy...well maybe...LOL
I got started in 2010...a challenge related to my 30 year High School reunion...it was a sprint...couldn't imagine swimming a half mile and riding a bike 15!...wow...loved it...hooked.
Since then....more sprints, 3 Oly's, 3 HIM, first IM last year Louisville....I love the HIM distance...(and the full monty too).
Strongest discipline is running...I've been running since college...(with a 5-7 year hiatus in my mid30's)...I really like the balance that swimming and biking add to my fitness..........have alot to gain on the bike.
Not much for strength training ( I did alot of weights in my younger days...for Hockey>>) ...now I only do core and some light DBell work on Mondays after an easy jog....
what got you started- played tons of basketball growing up and in college. tried hanging onto it as real world hit but had a hard time making my schedule work with the tip times of the best pickup games in the area. decided to try running cuz I could train on my own hours and stay in shape (never a fast runner). started getting hurt alot. buddy dared me to do a tri and fell in love with the benefits of multisport training.
what distances - all, but I only race about 2x a year, and tinkering with ultra stuff, enjoyed this solo self inflicted long day http://bricks4hope.weebly.com/ (would like to do this again if I can get others to go with)
disciplines - swimming is the challenge. only swimming I knew was how to get back to a waterski. biking is fun, my strongest tho that's relative. running at the end is simply my own test of toughness.
strength training - body weight stuff, pushups, pullups, wall squats, etc.
Kim- u ask, but u no answer. fess up.
Glad you asked this. I am curious about this sort of stuff too. My answers below...
How long have you been tri-ing? First sprint in 2009. Came in 5th in my group on a mountain bike and was hooked. Also like that Tri's have a FOM (fat, old man) group (usually referred to as master Clydesdale). Nice to compete against folks that are similar to me.
What got you started in tri's? Starting running to help lose weight and was looking for a different challenge as well as a way to spread the punishment evenly. Also I remembered seen a Magnum PI where he was doing Kona for the show and since then I always wanted to do a long course tri.
What distances have you done? Fave distance? I've gone sprint first year, Oly second year,. HIM last year. No IM yet but have IMLP coming up. Favorite distance is Him so far. Just love the challenge and discipline that it takes to get to the finish line.
Strongest discipline? Weakest? Favorite? Bike is strongest, swim and run are about equally weak. Favorite has to be the bike.
Strength training? How/when? No real strength training except for what they have me doing in PT which is one a week.
How long have you been tri-ing? First Sprint in sept. 09
What got you started in tri's? Started off just wanting to do a 5k for weight loss and the personal challenge. (Always hated running though!) Except for swiming 1 yr. in HS, started pretty much from no base of any of the 3 disciplines.
What distances have you done? Fave distance? Sprint, oly and HIM. First IM will be FL in Nov. I'd have to say oly is my fave but there really aren't enough of them around here.
Strongest discipline? Weakest? Favorite? Biking is strongest and favorite, except when there are hills involved. Weakest is def. the run, but swim is a close second. Wait, I take all that back.... Tapering and carb-loading are my strongest.....
Strength training? How/when? Not much. I have heard so much conflicting info on this (like most other things). There just doesn't either seem to be enough time or energy in a day to do it so it hasn't been a priority. I would like to do more, but just can't get it in. From a weight loss perspective, I know building muscle increases overall calorie burn and from an injury prevention perspective it makes sense too.
I'm nosey today, huh? I'm really not usually a nosey type, but the other thread started it.
How long? Since 2009
What got you started? I was 50 lbs overweight, dangerously high blood pressure and cholesterol. Had to change or die.
What distances? I started with oly's in 2009, HIM in 2010, then IMCDA & IMAZ in 2011. Absolute fav is Ironman, anything less then HIM is a waste of my time (in my opinion...hold the hate mail)
Best and Worst Discipline? Started as best was swim worst is run. But now my best is run and worst is swim. Although I consider the bike a grind.
Haven't dine a lot of strength since starting EN, it's been tough to get it in time wise.
Really focusing on the run this year. Want to get to Boston for 2013.
What got you started in tri's? I swam in HS and college and when I started cycling, one of my pals and a former coach suggested I get into triathlon
What distances have you done? Fave distance? Everything from sprint to IM. Probably prefer OLY and HIM, with sight bias to OLY b/c it's the one with the longest percentage of total time swimming. Long enough to be a challenge, but not so long that the training runis your life
Strongest discipline? Weakest? Favorite? Stength is the swim, weakest is running, though have been working hard on that the past 3 yrs. Favorite is the bike
Strength training? How/when? Very sporadic and mostly just core and use of my TRX during out-season and when on business or personal travel.
What got you started in tri's? always worked out, but was getting out of shape and bored by just gong to the gym. saw IM on TV and said, that's what I should be doing. signed up for a sprint and olympic in 2010 before I even owned a bike or had a pool to swim in. I've been hooked ever since.
What distances have you done? Fave distance?Done Sprint, olympic and IM (LP)...So far IM is my fave, IM #2 is in FL this year...2013 is the year of HIM.
Strongest discipline? Weakest? Favorite? I've been running since high school but all short distance stuff, somehow swimming has become a strong sport for me even though I'm not a swimmer. Swam a 1:09 at LP. Was very excited about this. Bike is my weakest but I'm looking to change this. I think its just going to take some time. I've only been biking since 2010. I love the run for the simplisity of the training. Just put the shoes on and go. I love the bike, but hate "cars" and the maintenance that comes along with it. I love the swim for the fitness but hate chlorine and the sensory deprivation (head under water).
Strength training? How/when? Twice a week if I can fit it in. I usually run at the gym on a TM so its pretty easy to fit in 20 minutes of weights. As soon as things get longer I drop the weights becasue it takes to long to recover. Also have done sets of 20 push ups followed by some band work. I'll keep rotating until i've hit about 100 push ups.
I'm nosey today, huh?
Since 2002 have done est. 50 races.
What got you started in tri's?
Seen Ironman Canada live in 2001 and told myself, heck I ride my bike everyday to work and back, mountain bike on weekends, run 5 days a week all i need to do is learn how to swim and I could do this.
What distances have you done? Fave distance?
sprint, oly, HIM(15), IM(4)
Strongest discipline? Weakest? Favorite?
Bike-Run-Swim, even though bike is my strongest the run is my fav.
Strength training? How/when?
Oct-Jan 4 times a week, once OS starts I drop it to mon-wed noon hrs and mostly upper body.
how long: since 2006
get started: I was an out of shape ex-rower (Cornell) who got into half and full marathons to get back in shape. I'd wanted a road bike since I started watching the TdF in 2002, and bought one in 2006 when I graduated business school. My friends reminded me then that I was already running and now biking, so I should try out triathlon. Did my first sprint, and was totally hooked!
Distances: sprint, oly, HIM (4), IM (1). Favorite is probably sprint, due to low recovery cost and ability to do a whole bunch in a season. But the one IM I did left a permanent longing for another in me, it was that fun.
Strongest discipline: seems to alternate between bike and run for the last couple of seasons. Hoping to step it up in all three this year! Swim has been weak, but mostly due to lack of attention.
Strength training: I'm on a functional strength training program to attempt to strengthen glutes and lower abs, as well as improve imbalances L/R. Done for 5-15 minutes, 3-4 times a week.
how long: since summer 2010
got started: my husband and I joined a gym to get into shape doing crossfit type workouts, eventually graduated to partner training with a trainer. One day I decided I needed to find a new challenge...I thought to myself, "ok, I'm fit...now what?" So, I thought Triathlon would be a great goal to work towards. Joined a local tri club in Jan 2010, and started racing that summer...like everyone else, we've been hooked ever since!
Distances: first ever was a Try a Tri (and I think this just may have been my hardest race) followed by Sprints, Olys and HIM. First IM coming up this July in Lake Placid. I think Olys are my fav distance...but they all have their own charm, so to speak
Strongest discipline: I would say I'm pretty average across the board, but swimming is my most comfortable. The run used terrify me, but since joining EN I have made a conscious choice to shift the way I look and feel about my run. I enjoy the bike and especially like hilly courses.
strength training: absolutely! I love weights...train 2 x week. Also working on functional strength training to help my run stride/technique
My turn:
Started tris in 2010. Hurt my hip in the 2009 Chicago Marathon (still ran a Boston qualifying time) and my brother (JT Thompson also in EN) talked me into getting in the pool to cross train while my hip healed. Then he talked me into doing a tri. Did my first sprint tri in June 2010, and I had no idea what I was doing. Have learned so much from EN since then.
I've done all the distances including one IM. My favorite is Olympic distance since it is a nice blend of speed and endurance, can be raced often and doesn't trash you for weeks after. Still there is nothing like crossing the finish line of your first IM.
Running is my strongest since I've been a runner for years. I'm ok in swimming and working hard to turn biking into a strength this year.
Yes - I do strength training 2x/week. Both upper and lower body.
