Trainer Road Test FTP Went Up, HR Went Down ???

Performed my second Trainer Road test which is a 20 minute test and my FTP numbers went from 247-262, but my LTHR number given dropped from 147 to 142.  Does this mean I may have held back a bit, kinda of thought the HR would go up thus my confusion not to mention I'm not certain there was much more power to put out on the pedals this morning.

The trainer road program is my only measurement for power and I'm real anal about checking inflation on the tire and number of turns on the trainer (Kurt Kinetic) to keep it comparable.  Overall I like the program and feel like it's getting my EN workouts to the workload I'm suppose to be doing when stuck on the trainer.  Buying a PT at this point is not in the cards.

Just want to make sure I'm on legit numbers going into the start of the OS week 9 with the Vo2 work coming up?

TIA

Steve

  • Not unusual as you gain fitness.
  • Agree with Bob, Fitness is in the muscles not your HR...

    cool profile pic.
  • its an indicator that your legs are getting stronger and your heart and cardiovascular system is getting more efficient.  Keep up the good work

  • You could do the same test tomorrow and your HR could be higher. Too much variability with it. Nice work.
  • We train to go faster/push out more watts, not to raise/lower heart rate. Bottomline, watts went up. That's a good thing! Don't bother trying to figure out the HR peice. As Tucker said, it can be very variable from day to day.

  • could be you had too much coffee or were dehydrated on the first test. Stick with power numbers image
  • Steve, as every body said. You are not alone, I had similar number and changes between first and 2nd test. (FTP 251 -> 262 and HR 169-> 163), Do not sweat the HR.

Nate, claims that he is getting it wattage constant across workouts by +/- 3watt, by using his procedure (also see read post +#16, #24 in the same thread)
My guess is without a roll-down calibration and only with Nate N=1 expierence, even if you get with his SOP a consistancy between workouts of only +/- 5%, still this is good enough for for doing workouts Z3 / Z4 and Z5 are 20% apart.
If you FTP grows over time by 10 or 20watts, will that is more fuzzy, but so what ... the trend is right - and still much better than using only HR image
  •  Thanks for the info.  Being new to power and being one that had depended on HR in the past sometimes it's tough to shift your focus to what's important instead of what your familiar with.  I knew I was getting stronger with the power numbers the last few weeks using Trainer Road.

Kai, Looking back at that post I must have missed Nate's mentioning of his set up since I use the exact same trainer and tire.  I must have skiped over that thread as I keep tabs on BT and ST too.   I try to keep things the same for every ride with regards to the bike and the trainer so the numbers are somewhat meaningful.
