Golden Cheetah Bike Scores (TSS) in the OS

Curious what bike scores you guys are seeing in the OS.  For me, my weekday rides are usually 50-60 (3.5 w/kg, avg 50 minute ride) and weekends around 110-115 (~1.5 hrs).  Bike score was definitely higher during the FTP phase than the VO2 phase for me.  Today I did a :52 ride with an RI of .85 and 12' of 45/45s at 120% (~260w) and received a bike score of 57.  Power Agent reports a TSS of 65 and IF of .86, FWIW.

  •  Matthew, did a 46 minute os ride this morning 12 min ON. 4 x 2.5 and one 2.  I managed around 275 for the ON times and my bike score was 65 and Daniels pts score was 52. I am pretty new to power and know little of what these numbers mean. The 275 number was just a hair above 120%. It was a pretty good morning.

  • Sounds typical of what I'm seeing right now Matthew. Focus for the OS is to hit the intervals in the Main sets. These secondary metrics will be what they are. That will all change once OS is over and race specific plans kick in. Last year in prep for LP, my CTL or long term average daily score was north of 100. For now, the plans are designed to give you an adequate training stress to make you faster, while minimizing the time required to do it. The metrics you are asking about are weighted more heavily towards time than intensity if I remember the formulas correctly. If your FTP and Threshold paces are correctly set through the testing methods, you should be getting plenty of work while maintaining your sanity.
  • I never look at TSS in the OS. I really don't think it adds a lot of value as a metric. I watch my intervals like a hawk and I'm acutely aware of my FT number and what IF I'm at or have been riding at when riding hard. For every other part of the ride, it doesn't really matter to me.

Once OS is done, I pay much more attention to TSS and specifically the PMC chart in WKO. My TSS average per day is very similar year after year as I ramp towards my Ironman A race.
  • Like Tom, I don't monitor TSS in the OS. That said, just looking at this week, my 60' rides were 77 and 87 and my 90' ride was 116. I am in week 7 so not into the VO2 phase yet where TSS numbers will be lower due to less time very near or above FTP. Overall during the OS my weekly TSS hovers around 550 to 650. That is bike and run, I don't swim in the OS.
  • x3 on TSS = junk in the OS. Mike Graffeo wrote some really, really smart stuff about this in the past. Basically the TSS numbers are pretty deceiving given the nature of some of our VO2 sessions, etc.
  • Here's the article I believe Coach P is referring to "Focusing on What Matters in the OS":
