MD Help Please: Fatigue Post Sinus Chest Head Cold

Docs:  I kind of had it all (sinus, chest, head cold).  Started about 10 days ago, I self Rx'ed with a Z-pack (helped).  Symptoms started to fade about 5 days ago.  Matter of fact, I feel pretty good...except when I am trying to go hard (Zone 4).  Feels like a lot of effort (HR comfirms) to maintain Zone 4.  Contast that with when I DID have symptoms and I was going as hard as I wanted (head hurt but I could go hard).  I assume the lingering fatigue is normal?  Any advice?

  • I think that's the trailing edge, and part of the ramp up. As we get back into the work, I find that transition to the upper levels of effort are the hardest, hence I tell folks to get the time of those intervals in but expect the %s to drop a bit.
  • Hey Jim, I want to add a couple of reminders.

    1. In my experience, there will be times (durations vary) when we will be dragging. And the time when it hits me or the next guy may be totally different than when it hits you. Compound that with the fact that you've been sick, boom! Take it easy on yourself. It's unrealistic to think that you're going to knock it outta the park every week.

    2. Antibiotics are known for their negative effect on this kind of performance. I was reading in Bob Roll's book about how the cyclists would do everything in their power to avoid antibiotics during the race season because of this. Usually hits 7-10 days after antibiotics are finished.

    Just something to consider.

    Hang un there.
