Run and bike test

Hey guys, just finished first run and bike test. Is it normal for your  hr average to be different between the two?  My avg hr for run was 160, but for the bike was 127. I ran the 3 miles straight by accident. Just now getting back on the bike. That was probably 3rd time on the bike after a long layoff. I'm still trying to get comfortable on the bike and working with setup, but that still seemed like a big variance. Thanks

  • Yes, very probable to have a lower HR for the bike than the run.

However, 127 sounds very low to me for your bike, if you can hit an average of 160 for the run.
  • Brian,
My bike is much lower also. I feel like my big difference is that I can't seem to make myself suffer on the bike as much as I can on the run. The upside is I feel there is great room for improvement on the bike.
  • 10 bpm difference is not uncommon at all. Larger is seen, but less frequently. Often, especially after a long layoff, the body just plain doesn't remember how to push as hard, leading to a result like you've seen. After a block of training, there's a good chance you'll see closer numbers on your next test.
  • +1 on Mike and Scott, I will add that fitness is in the muscles. What you are experiencing after a long layoff is the fact that your HR limiter is actually your legs. They are tiring out prior to your cardiovascular system getting taxed. Be patient and you will have them close very soon.

  • Thanks guys!! Makes me feel better. Definitely felt like my legs were the limiter!!!!
