Volume Mini Camp Proposal (Not Final): April 13 - 16

Before we proceed, yes I know this would be Boston Marathon weekend...I am only plotting / scheming here, nothing else!

I am looking to put in some volume before Ironman Texas. It appears the best option for me is to jet down to the National Training Center in Clermont, FL (just outside Orlando). This is a great place to train, with an outdoor, 50m pool and plenty of places to ride / run. I have trained here before...

I am proposing a late Thurs Arrival, Late Monday Departure. This would give us four full days to live like trigeeks: Fri / Sat / Sun / Mon.

This would mean some epic swimming and cycling. I will be leading from the front, so it's much more of a training experience (during the day) with lectures at night, etc. I could give some advice on your swim and run form, but most of the cycling would be independent.

If you are interested in this event, a great option for early season racers esp east coast peeps, please reply here so I can guage the interest....

Thanks!

Patrick

  • if it were between 3/30-4/9 i could be there--in FL anyway at that time
  • I am definitely interested! I will have to rearrange some of my work travel, but I am optimistic I can make it happen.
  • Any estimates on costs per day to stay there? I'd give it some serious thought...
  • Tempting... But I'd really be psyched if we could put together something in advance of IMFLand be able to do a race rehersal on the course. image
  • Damn straight...it's in my backyard. I know all the roads out there, BuckHills and Sugarloaf Mtn especially. I've been to the NTC many times, I know the Orange Grove trail (10 mile dirt road where the pro's train) and Lake Louisa Park. However, I have commitments on the weekend of Mar 18, Mar 31 (might be able to change this one), Apr 14 and May 6. I don't know if I can do all 4 days since I'm taking time for the San Juan 70.3 and St Croix 70.3.

There are a couple hotels within a block or two of the NTC. They typically charge $89 to $119 a night depending on whether there is an event going on. You'll want to deconflict with Sommer Sports tri schedule...there's an olympic late March and a HIM in mid-April. Another option is a cabin at Lake Louisa.

  • I frequent Clermont and the NTC often for hills and would definitely be up for this virtually any other weekend but can't make it on the proposed weekend. As long as there aren't any big bike/tri/NTC events that weekend, you shouldn't have trouble getting reasonable room rates at either of the walkable hotels near the facilities, which are also just a short way from the Great Floridian bike course for some surprisingly difficult hills. I'll keep my ears open on the thread in the event something changes date-wise.

  • I would love to come as this is only a couple hr drive north for me. But I have Heat tickets, 5th row court level that I got as a present for my son on Fr the 13th. So the weekend before or after would be better for me as I could likely stay all weekend but if the dates are firm I could come up on Thur, ride Fri come back home for the game, and then catch back up with y'all on Sat.
  • Coach P, I would LOVE to do this but that is Spring Break week for my kids and we have family plans.  Next time for sure though.

  • Mar 24-25 is the 29th Annual Great Clermont Triathlon (Sprint and Kidz Tri's on Saturday, Olympic on Sunday)
Apr 15 is the 28th Florida Challenge Triathlon (70.3)

Excluding this weekend's ITU races, these are the 2 biggest events in Clermont in the March and April timeframe.
  • You guys are awesome...thanks for all the info. I am trying to personally deconflict between a race and a triathlon rally (and a recently requested swim clinic!) so I need to leave the date open a bit longer. I am looking in April just as that's free...and the proposed weekend means I get a "free" day b/c Maura would be off anyway....but I need to check out the swim session option first. Stay tuned as I try to hash this out, thanks!!!
