WTC CEO Andrew Messick's Keynote

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4M3uh0guF7o&list=UUaWP3soFKxAi8oXzYxaU-oA&index=3&feature=plcp

From Triathlon America industry conference.  Key points if you don't have 45' to watch:

* 66,000 IM athletes in 28 races

* 90% market share

* Looking to strengthen relationship/value proposition to athletes so athletes don't "lapse" after 3-4 races

* All about growth strategies (more races, more value, brand leverage, etc.)

Messick is super smart and I am very happy with the new direction and focus from WTC.

  • Totally agreed. My whole family slept better tonight. image
  • In a way this is terrifying. WTC was getting by for 20+ years like they said about George H W Bush "He was born on third base and thought he hit a triple". Meaning they had this golden iconic brand, but zero business savvy. Now with a real pro at the helm, they will be the 800 TON goriila. Like Patrick says, it's good for those who make their living within the WTC ecosystem, but if they squash all competition, there's always a risk they will, without meaning to, make triathletes' lives more rather than less difficult. Especially to those of us who, for better or worse, have become addicted to WTC IM racing (to which I must obviously confess.) Maybe I should wean myself before it's too late. Or have I already been absorbed?

  •  @ Al, I believe you have been "assimilated"

  • You know, that never would have happened to J.T. Kirk.

    Messick danced around new races, but it seems pretty clear that (a) St George is at risk and (b) there will be an IM in California in 2013 - no sites mentioned, but isn't San Luis Obispo gunning for it? Other sites teased at: Brasil, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Japan, the US "Southeast".

  • St George is probably toast after their 5 year contract is up. I don't expect it to end this year. But then again, I recall when they pulled the plug on IM70.3 Newfoundland after its 2nd year. Brazil is interesting since there already is one. Maybe the demand is sufficient for 2 there now similar to Germay. Eastern Europe would be cool. MidEast won't work except for possibly Dubai. Tough to get to and travel would be extraordinarily expensive...would be mostly for Europeans. Japan...ha, ha...keep trying, but who wants to take the risk on a China, Japan, Korea IM after the past few years? US Southeast--we are still waiting for the announcement on IM South Carolina!!
  • In my NON buisiness mind, if races are selling out STUPID fast that should mean there is a good chance new races in the same market should do reasonably well. Like the East Coast love and I have heard of this SC race in the past...Any more info on this. Believe IM reps visited SC for a meeting sometime last year.
    Assuming it's not in July or August (silly hot) it could be a good spot to do a race.

    Had it not happened to Jean Luc, I would have said the same thing about him...  We're all at risk when it comes to the unstoppable force of the Borg!

  • I actually found an offer from Williamsburg VA to Ironman in May of 2003. Makes for an interesting read.
