Biking 5 days a week?

Hi Team,

I will not be able to run for about 6 weeks and am trying to figure out what I should do about training.  Due to an injury, being sick for about a month and a new baby; this OS has been fairly subpar (at week 19 I am about 20 watts below normal and 20 sec slower on the run for my FTP), so maybe a nice bike focus stretch will bring me to new heights on the bike.  I was thinking about the following schedule:

Mon: Swim

Tues: 1  hour bike: 30-40min (in smaller chunks) at FTP

Wed: 1 hour bike: something like 3x 15min at 80-85% and then a swim

Thurs: 1 hour bike: 3x3-4min at 105-110% and build up to maybe 6x3-4min at 105-110% plus 10x 30/30 or 5x 1/1 (this is a modified version of a part of the Power Hack.

Fri: Swim

Sat: Bike 2-3 hours with the standard FTP (40min) and ABP (as much as possible) work

Sun: Bike 1.5-2 hours (ABP)

The good news is I am still doing short course stuff this year, the bad news is my first planned race is May 10th.  I hope I will have at least some run fitness after running for about 4 weeks before the race.  Anyway, any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Last year, I was biking 4-5/week, Tue/Thu with a local roadie group, Wed with my local tri team, long ride saturday, medium ride sunday. Along with several big bike weekends, a trip to Majorca Spain, long weekend of riding at Camp Truscott in Aspen, I had my best cycling season ever! I love my bike!

I also swam an hour prior to each Tue/Thu ride. Ran on Mon, ran long on Wednesdays, hills on Fridays.

All of which resulted in a new PR for the IM for me (still not as good as where I wanted it to be), but for me the recipe for success on the bike is volume - and EN style volume!
  • Thanks for sharing your experience Scott! Maybe I will look to extend my rides, however, I am stuck on the trainer doing the week so extending it by a lot does not sound very appealing. I am willing to give it a go though.
    Thanks again.
  • I think it's doable as long as you limit yourself on the weekends to what you've proposed. However, I think you'll get better results, and maybe keep the family happy, by taking Sunday completely off?
