Bike race for training

Hey guys, been off the grid for a while but I have a question. 9 weeks till IMTX and this weekend is Abilene's only bike race of the year. I usually do it and it is about 48 miles. Question is: if I have a 4-5 hour ride that day and am doing the race as part of that should I 1. use my road bike for the race and finish up the 4-5 hours on my road bike 2. use my tri bike for the race and finish up the 4-5 hours on same, or 3. use my road bike for the race and switch over to the tri bike for the remainder of the time? I ask because I know this close to my A race I need to be riding the tribike all the time and have for the last 2 months but for a bike race I don't know if I want to be "THAT GUY ON THE TRIBIKE" . After I typed this up it sounds like a stupid question but posting it anyway.

  • You already know the a swer right? You've spent enough time on the tribike that one day won't do any harm. Might actually be good for a little break.
And would you actually be able to ride the tt bike in a road race?
  • Do the bike race on your road bike (very, very unlikely you'll be allowed to use your tri bike) and are you then able to get in most of that scheduled 4hr ride the next/other day that weekend?

  • @coach rich, I will be missing my ABP ride on Sunday due to family stuff I need to be at out of town so wanted to make the most of my long saturday ride.
  • I wouldn't sweat the missed IM-specific bike time. Maybe warmup/cool down an extra hour total if you want, otherwise just hammer your brains out and have fun with it!

  • If you do the race, put a piece of tape over your power meter. Do not look at it during the race. Have fun!
  • The most significant benefit of this will be the mental break. After spending 4 million hours (just guessing) on your tri bike training for IM, swapping paint in a race will be a good way to have some fun and get some high intensity work in at the same time. Your VI will vary drastically from what you've been used to, but that's okay.

Have a great time! Keep the rubber side down!
  • Agree with coach (if I didn't, I wouldn't admit it anyways, jk); enjoy the race, kill it, and move on. Make sure you warm up very good though.

The body of work you have put in will cover the one weekend. And, one session on a road bike vs tri bike will be irrelevant.

Keep it simple, one bike, and have fun. See you in TX!
