Fun day at the pool
Had a nice swim today.
I've been swimming three mornings per week with a masters group and making some good gains from where I started pretty quickly. But I hit a bit of a plateau (quite reasonable). Took a good lesson from a new coach recently, and I've been adding one or two short extra swims per week to give me a little pop over this pause in progress. (I'm one of the lucky few for whom there is little overhead besides shower time for a casual extra swim or two.)
Which brings me to today.
Annoying day at the office. Early lunch of very spicy hummus. Looked at the clock right after eating and saw I could sneak in a half hour swim. Irritated as I was already, this sounded like a good idea. (Note to self - don't eat a big pile of spicy hummus right before you plan to swim next time.)
Got to the pool. Was still pissed at the people in the "medium" lane from last time I did this, so I ventured into the "fast" lane with a pre-apology to a couple of people I recognized immediately and knew we a lot faster than me. Told them I would try to stay out of their way. :-)
I jumped in and straight away just started swimming. After hitting my first 100 I looked at my watch on the turn and saw a pretty good number. The position of fast guy #1 made stopping a bad idea, and two more people jumped in, so stopping seemed like a worse idea. After 200 I still was doing ok, and all of a sudden I realized I hadn't done a 1000 TT since I started with the masters group.
WTF. Let's just swim 1000 and see what happens.
So I just kept swimming. Hard and with purpose, but not crazy. In other words...just hard enough to hold good form.
Finished 1000 in 15:08 in a reverse split of 7:38 and 7:30.
Previous best (neglecting whatever I might have done in high school) was 15:37 from 3 years ago, and I never beat 15:45 last year.
Not bad for no warmup whatsoever and a rapidly developing fire in the tummy. :-)

nice. yards or meters?
Trying to hide in the obscurity of fora, Tucker. :-)
You know we won't be satsified unless you go sub 68/33 in your next IM or HIM.
Last several HIM total swim times have been 37-39. One choppy swim 41, one point to point (current?) of 34.
