Another 8k race report

Another weekend, another 8k, another PB! I honestly expected to run this one slower than last weekend, esp due to extending my bike ride yesterday. But I guess the energy of 40,000 runners and the crowds, coupled with the near-perfect running conditions, resulted in a really great race.

The GPS track is totally screwed up due to the downtown course but the total was 8k, 31:48, 6:24 pace and a 21 second PB over last weekend's race. My placing was 547/34287 overall, 473/14652 in gender, 57/2352 in M3539.

Paces:

Mile 1 - 6:24

Mile 2 - 6:19

Mile 3 - 6:19

Mile 4 - 6:40 (fading big-time)

Mile 5 - 6:16 (cure mental voice: "you can do ANYTHING for six and a half minutes")

Interestingly I did a brick run to calibrate the footpod yesterday but somehow my watch reset to using GPS for the speed source right before the race (I swear I checked it in the starting corral and it was set for footpod…no idea what happened there).

And then after the race I ran another 5.02 miles from the race site to brunch (6:57 pace), thus ensuring I met the requirements of my Sunday run workout!

Cheers!

  • Nicely done Matt! What does that bring your VDOT to?

Question for you about footpod calibration --- does it only 'work' for one basic pace? Or is it good across pace/cadence changes?
  • VDOT is now 51.58. The paces are absurd and I have no idea how I'll hit them. The z3 and z4 convergence is in full effect and now are only 8 sec apart.

As for the footpod, I wish I knew. I calibrated it at "race pace" on my racing shoes on Saturday, but since it screwed up in the race I really don't know how good the calibration was. On my FR60 on a treadmill I do notice that the amount of pace difference between the mill's display and the footpod data differs by up to 20-30 sec/mile depending on if I'm doing a z4 interval or a recovery. And I have heard others say that the calibration is only good for a range of pace and if you get too far out of the range the error will be larger. I was optimistic that in a race - when my pace was to be constant over the course of the run - the footpod data would be very accurate with the new calibration. But I guess I'll have to wait for another time to find out. Not sure when I'm next expecting to race in an area of bad GPS signal, however......
  • Well done, Matt!
  • Good job Matt.  Have fun with those new zones.  You're gonna rock Pleasant Priarie and Racine.
