Remedial Question ... Bike Hack?

I feel like I should know the answer to this, but I'm a little confused ... I've heard talk of the Bike Hack on the forums, and the weekly Coach P podcast that popped up on my training plan yesterday mentions the "top secret Bike Hack" that starts this week (week 9 of the OS for me). Is this magical/mythical "Bike Hack" already built into my OS, or is it something I need to seek out and implement? Sorry for the dumb newbie question. I searched around the site and had trouble finding the right info.

Thanks in advance for your patience and help!

  • I believe that the bike hack has been done away with, so you don't have to worry about it.

  • The "hacks" are simply an increased volume of a given sport. A bike hack is used within a workout plan to get more work done in that discipline. Due to the increased volume and/or intensity the other disciplines may have to be reduced or fatigue /burnout may follow. There is a marathon/half marathon hack and a swim hach in the wiki, but normally when an athlete wants more volume pop for the bike they add what we call a Big Bike Week or BBW. Because you can twist the screws much tighter for the bike training than you can with run training a bike hack would be much safer to accomplish while still maintaining your normal workout schedule.
  • Jennifer,

just a little context. Back in the 2009 and 2010 OS, there was a program, referred to as the Power Hack, which was a super-top-secret, only a few get to play sort of deal. Basically took our VO2 block, which at the time was mostly a lot of 30/30's, and blew it out to longer intervals (more to it, but that's the top-line). After 2010, the power hack protocol learnings were integrated into the regular OS plan, and since have been updated even further with the "on-time" prescription. Hence, what Anson is referring to.

What Steve is referring to is the various options for 'bike-focusification' of the OS (also a wiki entry). Still exists, and still an option throughout the OS.

Haven't heard the particular podcast you're referring to, but it could be in reference to either.
