Cycling in New Zealand

I just scheduled 3 weeks in New Zealand 1/2 in the North Island and 1/2 in the South from Feb 18th to March 11th.  And, as a good EN camper, I am taking my road bike and of course my running shoes

Has anyone cycled there before?  And if so, any suggestions?

Thanks for the input

Really looking forward to some warmer conditions

  • I do not know much about the cycling, but I heard there is a guy in the boston area who is very good at carrying heavy bags and cooking. You want to look into bringing him along to help you out.

  • I didn't get to bike much while there- but I though about it alot! First thing of course to remember is that they drive on the left. So you have to get comfy riding on the "wrong" side of the road. Second- there are almost no shoulders along their roads. Frankly- there were tons of beautiful places I'd be scared to death to ride a bike. The north island is much more populated and thus has more roads than the south island. We were there in the spring time and the roads were not too busy, but I'd imagine the roads on the South Island will get more traffic in summer. Where specifically are you going to be traveling while you are there? Oh, and FYI, we received consistent advice from folks to plan to spend 2/3 of your time in the South Island and 1/3 in the North- we found that advice to be pretty much spot on.

PS- I'd be happy to join you as your tour guide! I'm really small and could fit in carry on luggage if necessary!
  • Mike - the Epic Camp crew have just finished cycling the full length of New Zealand - if you take a look at their website and blogs etc you may get a few ideas. http://www.epiccamp.com/
