Odd twinge in knee after foot work

I have been struggling with chronically tight calfs for the past few seasons.  Lots of work with a foam roller and my SO's elbows have allowed me to continue training and get rid of the frequent knots and trigger points that come up.  One thing I have started doing lately is keeping a small lacross ball under my desk at work.  I use it on the bottom of my feet and have noticed a bit less stiffness in my feet and ankles recently.  One technique though has been causing a odd result.  If I keep steady pressure for 1-2 minutes on some of the sensitive areas in my arch, when I stop a twinge on my vastus medialis oblique appears. On a pain threshold (1-10) it is only about a 2, but it is certainly present and has happened in both legs multiple times.

I understand that the entire chain is linked, I am just concerned if there is some flaw in mine, a weakness or issue that I need to address before it becomes a bigger problem.  Doesn't seem worth going to the doctor for but I thought some of the team might have some thought and input.  Thanks.

  • One thought to consider is that the position you are in during pressure application to the foot may be causing a prolonged contraction of the vastus medialis and you feel the tightness after you relax. But it is all due to the foot massage treatment.

You could consider professional massage (deep tissue with someone that understands the endurance athlete) every 1-2 weeks focusing on the legs and feet.
