Any recommendations on transporting rear wheel covers to race venue?

I'm shipping my bike with one of those services that sends it via truck in tact.

My question is, if I race with rear wheel covers, How should I get them there?  Should I....

1)  put it on the bike wheel for the transport? -- this one lets me ship with my race wheels attached

2)  buy a wheel bag and chunk the original box in the wheel bag and send on the truck?

3)  ship original box ups or other?

4)  pack in suitcase and/or wheel bag?

Any wisdom from EN'ers on this transport dilemma?

Thanks!

  • Put the box with your bike if they will let you...doesn't have to be harder than that. If not, just ship it...it is super light and you can ship standard shipping (ground) straight to your hotel since you don't need the wheel cover before you get there. Send it like 10 days early to make sure it gets there.

  • I use Tri Bike Transport and always put my wheel covers on before shipping. Gives me a day to test them before I ship and it eliminates hassles.
  • Last year for IM 70.3 San Juan I used TBT, but I packed my wheel covers (slightly curled up) in my suitcase on the way there and they arrived fine. I left the covers on the wheel for the return trip - no problems that way either.
  • I've put them in a wheel bag and included to ship. Though on the way home from CDA I didn't take the wheel cover off, just a couple screws.
  • I've used TBT before and left them on the bike, no problem. Another time I took off the wheel covers, tied them together with a piece of heavy twine, and just carried them on the plane with me (great conversation starter), then put them on at the race site - which also enabled me to give a last minute checkout of my race wheels while putting them on.
