IM Course Food Changes

As CoachP posted earlier, the gels on the course will now be Gu, not PowerBar gels. The other change is that there will be bars available on the course - Bonk Breaker (http://www.bonkbreaker.com/). I was skeptical of these bars, but tried some samples at the Galveston 70.3. They really are pretty good.

With these changes, if you plan to use the on course nutrition, be sure and try it during training to know whether or not it will work for you.

  • Good news on Gu. The power bar stuff was just awful, especially when hot!
  • Sweet! I love Gu gels!

  • Gu is great.
The bonk breaker bars are all natural and better than most bars. A definite thumbs up.
  • I'm gonna have to get used to the bonk breakers. I bought a bunch to test and choked one down during the long ride this past weekend. I like that they are pretty calorie dense and I'm hopnig I find a flavor I like.

Gu has been my go-to for years, so i'm happy to have it on the course. I'm a fan of Vanilla Bean.
  •  They will provide regular gu gel AND roctane?

    difference?

  • @ robin, not sure if they are providing both, but Roctane has caffein...would imagine it would be segregated...but maybe not...I took two Gu Roctanes on my bike at 2 hours and 4 hours during IMLP. worked pretty Good. Not sure I would want much more than that.
  • I just bought four flavors of the Bonk Breakers this week and love them. I am really happy that they're gluten/dairy free, thus avoiding (for me anyways) introducing anything on race day that I don't eat normally. They are very small in volume for a pretty big punch of calories - not a lot of bulk and filler. And NO SOY (thumbs up from me).

Only complaint is that they're pretty pricey to take a bunch out for training ($3 each at the only store in town that carries them, only slightly less ordering over internet), but overall I like!

  • There is an Ironman discount code (IM2012) which gets you 15% off on their website. However you do still get stuck with an approximately  $10 shipping cost

  • My local REI has the bars in stock, and REI has a 20% sale on 12 or more bars (can mix and match).

  • Had just tried these before post came out and really liked them. Used as replacement after training. Will try to use one in bike RR tomorrow, but I am not good with solid food except gel squares.
  • Remember, lots of fluid with both options!!!
  • Does any one know if the drink on the IM course will be GU Brew or Roctane? I'm pretty sure the gels are Roctane but not sure about the drink. I'm also guessing GU will provide individual bottles on the bike course????
  • The drink is Powerade Perform, not a Gu product (right?).

  • Drink: Ironman Perform - Mango/Orange on Bike; Lemon-Lime on Run
Gels: Gus (no idea if regular or Roctane or flavors - check the race guide to see if they say)
    Bars: Bonk Breakers
  • ;Penny - I was curious how you knew which specific flavors of Ironman Perform will be offered on the bike versus on the run?  My reason for asking is last year I did IM Arizona and it was the reverse (Lemon Lime on the bike and Mango Ornage on the run).  Since I use my own fuel on the bike (Infinit) but use the on course fuel on the run, I was trying to be sure what will be offered at my IM (Louisville) on the run course this year so I can train with it.  Thanks for your help!

  • They had both Roctane and regular in St George. They also had chicken broth-warm, warm coke, cookies-chocolate chip, salty chips, oranges, banana's. Honestly they had a freaking Buffett!!!!
  • @Dan: You are right, I had them backwards. Replied early without coffee on board. If you want to double check, the flavors should be in the participants race guide for the bike and run portions of the course.
  • I think the only constant at all the races is the Perform/Gu/Bonk Breakers. Let the race guide be your bible about what will be available on the course.
  •  Penny, I was hoping you were right as I kind of like the lemon lime but can't stand the mango - especially when it is warm. And at Louisville it will be warm!  Thanks.

  • This probably only applies to a limited number of people, but just as an FYI, the nutrition changes announced are for US Ironman events only. They seem to have struck a different deal for some of the international events. For example, events that are put on by World Endurance Canada will have Honey Stinger products for the on course nutrition. So you'll have stinger gels and Stinger waffles.

It gets tricky though, since Ironman Canada is an international event, but it's not held by WEC so I'm not sure if they'll go Gu, Stinger, or something else. Same applies for races like IMCOZ. Not sure what they'll end up with, but it may or may not go the same way as the US events.
  • Trevor: Good point. The athlete's guide for each race should provide the basic nutrition on the bike and run for the race.
  • St Croix is licensed and this past weekend they had both Gu and Power Gel on the course.
