So does hard swimming engage the glute and piriformis?

Did Long Run, back to back hard swims with sprints and then run mile repeats within 3 days. Glute and piriformis all jacked up. Extending right leg invoked a ton of pain. Kicking a ball was out of the question. Biked for 5 days straight. Pain gone. Haven't tried to run yet. Wondering if this was just classic overuse?  Does hard swim kick tax the butt muscles?

  • Jim - not sure, but I think it uses the hamstrings so probably the glutes too. My left hamstring cramped as soon as I stood up after the swim at the San Juan 70.3. The last 300 yards or so we had to fight a current and I know I was kicking harder. I'm stretching more and starting hamstring/glute exercises.
