Ironman race registration and volunteers question

I've always took my chances with registration in the past and have ended up scrambling recently with the last two being community fund and through multisports.com(no longer available). My sister and I planned to do Lake Placid 2013 even before I saw it on the EN race list. My question is about on site registration and volunteering. Can I send my mom and possibly Grandma to volunteer to get registration vouchers for us? Or can they only get them for themselves (no help- 84 year old grandma doesn't plan to start ironman racingimage They live in upstate NY and my sister and I live in Hawai'i so therein lies the logistical issue. Thanks.

Lynne

  • Pretty sure you have to be there.
  • Nope, you need to be there in person. Very bad juju to have someone register for you, ie, under a fake ID, etc.

  • Believe it took lake placid 2 hours to sellout this year. With added races in canada and NY it lessened the demand a wee bit. you just need to be at your computer ready to go when it opens up... I signed up online for both placid 2011 and florida2012 online. Fl sold out in 20 minutes or something crazy like that and instill got a spot. A little stressful for sure as I hit submit on active.com
  • Lynette - short version: you need to be there.

    tl;dr version:

IMLP 2012 did not sell out on site this year. Meaning all the volunteers got their registrations done, then non-volunteers, then they opened it up for online registration it was for sale online for about a day and a half! 2011 went up for online sale for about an hour. 2010 was up for online sale for 20 minutes.

While this is contrary to how one would imagine, LP is not local to a lot of places and it's impossible to get a single night's hotel room for Sunday night (all hotels are 5 nights min and $$$) before registration opens up so it's a bit self limiting in how much on site sale the venue will allow.

I know some people do and "all nighter" and drive up from the city and do on site reg, but that's the exception more than the rule.

Also there are now two events in a similar area (IMNY and IMMT) that very likely take away from IMLP on site registrations.

All of that being said, the best way to be sure to get in is onsite registration. Volunteering is always a "guaranteed" option and it allows you to give back, but walk up non-volunteer registrations are almost always fulfilled.

Good luck & I hope you figure out a way to get your registration in.
  • I live in Hawai'i- 5000 miles is excessive to travel for on site registration even if I didn't have work commitments that wouldn't allow it. I'm a three time IM LP finisher so I know the score with the 5 night minimum, etc. as that is not new. I just didn't know how the on site voucher system was working because my most recent was 2007 and I got in that year with a charity slot. If I don't get in on line I guess I cough over the community fund dollars again.
Rich- I wasn't going to have mom register as me, I thought you used to be able to get two vouchers or something.

  • Lynette,

As I'll be there, I can try to email/txt you when the on site line is almost done, that could give you and idea if/when online reg. goes on sale usually around 12PM EDT.
  •  If you do take your chances to register online, take my advice and be ready with an already set-up active.com account (with name, address, etc) and be ready - hitting refresh - about five minutes ahead of the opening time. That's worked for me and others with IMFL.

  • I signed up for IMLP 2012 from my house in Northern Virginia... If you are online when registration opens on 23 July, you should be ok with getting registered! Good luck!
  • I think Lake Placid is going to sell out quickly because it comes first, before Tremblant or NYC. People hunting for a northeast IM slot are going to try IMLP first and then if they get closed out go to one of the other two races. Not everyone obviously, but most I think. This year, both Tremblant and NYC opened registration before IMLP so some folks grabbed those slots first. LP filled in about 2-hours for general entry this year, the day and half was how long it took community spots to go.

So, I think there will be online LP registration, but I expect it to go quickly. Have your active account open exactly when the registration opens and don't delay. I got into IM Florida for this year by hitting refresh on my browser continuously on active until the site opened and then registered. Florida closed in like 9-minutes, but I got one of the spots.
  • @Scott Alex, you are doing IMFL this year???

  •  No sir, I am not. Ironman-free year in 2012! My local friends are trying to get me to do IMMT 2013. Haven't decided yet.
