HIM nutrition with EFS drink and gel

Getting ready for my first HIM this year and have been planning on using my past HIM nutrition plan but looking for any ways to make it better.

I am 135#, shooting for about a 2:30 bike split, and about 400 calories during the bike.  I start the bike with a Torhans with about 200 calories of EFS in it and no other bottles on the bike.  At the first aid station, I grab water and put it on the down tube.  Once the EFS is gone, I start eating out of an EFS gel flask that I keep in my jersey along with water.  I shoot to get another 200 calories out of it on the bike and then finish the gel flask on the run.

It's worked well in the past for me but I am not a huge fan of the gel flask - I'm always worried I'll drop it.  I'd love to do an all liquid nutrition but have never experimented with a 2.5 hour, 400 calorie bottle of EFS.  I'm not looking to leave EFS right now as I'm comfortable with it.

So my questions are this: 1) Any glaring issues you see with this HIM program, 2) Anyone used a high concentrate (400 cal) bottle of EFS?

Thanks.

  • Hi Matthew,

I don't see any problems with using a concentrated bottle of EFS as long as you practice with it. If you are concerned about losing it can you put a second concentrated bottle on the bike or have one in your special needs bag?
  • have you tried EFS Liquid shot? For my last 2 HIM's i used slightly diluted EFS LS in a BTA bottle - worked perfectly well. I may try a more concentrated EFS in training at some point
