Getting Logistics Dial In
Team,
I'll in the Campground by early afternoon on Thursday with my truck, trailer, one dog, no wife, and maybe a friend. Not sure what loop I'll be in, as I'm joining some other people/campers and will text or post back to the world where to find me.
I have on hand to lend:
- 3 beds in my trailer, 4 if you're a couple. Must like dogs, he likes to snuggle with strangers
- 2 x 2-man tents
- 1 x ~6-8 man tents
- 4 sleeping bags
- 3 sleeping pads
- Big ass grill
- 2 x big ass coolers + the fridge in the trailer.
- About 8-9 assorted chairs
(jeezus I really need to sell some crap)
If you'd like me to bring your bike and bike box up, please get that to me by Wednesday.
I can cook for everyone. I figure menu will be:
- Thurs: on you, pick up something from the road to eat or cook on my grill.
- Friday: pasta for dinner
- Saturday: I'll grill some awesome carne and pollo asada and we'll do tacos.
- Breakfasts: I'll bring up eggs, sausage, bagels, etc. Typical breakfast stuff.
- Beer: I'll raid my local craft liquor store for a great selection. Wine is on you unless you like Two Buck Chuck from Trader Joes
.
I'm now thinking I might try to borrow a road motorcycle from someone so I can volunteer to ride moto support during the race and save $$$ on camping fees. We'll see.
Let me know what questions you have or what I can do for you!

Hope all y'all have fun! Rich sure does like to host, and he's dam good at it too!
Count me in on a camper bunk if one is still available. Riley the WonderPup is welcome company. I've got sleeping bag and the like, but realized that my tent has seen better days, was considering buying a new one for this trip, but won't pass up the opportunity for a bit of shelter. More than happy to contribute to stocking food supplies as well.
As far as the actual link up, I wasn't 100% sure if I would head up Thursday afternoon/evening or Friday morning. Since it's over a 6hr drive for me and the long course is on Saturday, might be better to get up there on Thursday and have Friday to enjoy the whole atmosphere. What time are you departing LA on Thursday?
Thanks for your leadership here. I really appreciate it. As we get closer to this event, I am beginning to feel just a tad overwhelmed. I am going to drive up Friday. Probably leave Sierra Madre at 5:00 AM, grab Bob's (PTC Rebecca) husband and then dash up there. I should be squared away with lodging. I am going to crash in the Escalade I am borrowing, but would love to jump in with you at meal time. Whatever I could pitch in, I would be completely happy to.
Also - If you need anything, forget anything, I would happy to bring it up on Friday.
@Trevor: got it, bunk is reserved. I'm rolling at 0630 to beat traffic out of LA.
Friday dinner will be pasta and meat sauce. Saturday will be carne and chicken taco's. I plan on picking up a couple cases of mixed craft beers. I'll probably just grab some generic break fast type stuff and lunches will likely just be snacking on leftovers? So bring whatever you think compliments _that_ above.
@Dino, sounds good. I'll get word back to the rear about where we are camped. Send me a text to 626-203-3278 so I have your cell, for general purposes.
Trent: don't worry about food or beer, unless you want to pick up something special for yourself.
If you're driving down the 101, the last big city, sorta, before you exit to get to WF is King City. From KC, continue south and exit Jolon Road...or it might be called Bradley, not sure. Go west / right on Jolon. Left on Interlake Rd, then about 12 miles to a left into the park. When you exit the 101 you are now riding the bike course backwards. If you wanted, you could bust out the course map and ride the course the right way instead. In that case, the 101 is at about mile 35 of the course.
I'm trying to finalize logistics now on when I can get out of work for Thursday but likely won't meet the 6:30am LA rollout. Due to the way that the camping / vehicle passes work, is there anywhere I can park my car outside of the park and simply ride in on my bike, or do you advise just getting a camping pass for my car?
Hmm...I'm not sure. Is there anything on the website, maybe call the park? I can drive out and pick you up if can you figure that out.
I ended up shooting the organizers an email (amazingly fast response time btw) and they pretty much reiterated that there's nowhere close to the campgrounds itself to park and given that I know the closest town is still ~30mi's out, I'll give it a scout when I get out there, but am just planning on buying a camping pass at the gate in the likely event that nothing looks promising.
Got your cell # so will give you a call when I get up there to try and locate you. I have to hang around til Thursday midday due to work, but am planning on trying to take off about noon, hope that LA is somewhat manageable when I'm passing through at ~2p and then be up at Lake San Antonio around 6.
Ok, as for route, recommend you go 5 north, 57, 210 west, 5 north, then exit 46 in Lost Hills. This will take you to Paso. From there it's G9, I think. Just look for the line of cars with bikes on the top
. The above kinda takes you around LA, you don't want to take the 5 all the way through that time of day.
The alternative has me dropping $200 on a camping pass, which seems like wasted money for 1 person in a 2-door car. If I was able to make it to Monrovia on Thursday morning, you have room for me + 1 bike?
Sure! Full disclosure: it'll be you, me, Marvin and Riley in the truck. Marvin and Riley are pretty small and Riley is a great traveler. And 6:30 isn't set in stone, just that traffic going west through Pasadena gets exponenially worse in like 10' intervals starting at ~7a. So leaving before 7a saves us about 30-45' on the day, seriously.

You can park your car in my driveway.
Yep, we'll be there.
Send me a text to 626-203-3278 so I have your number (pretty sure I already do but just in case) and I'll text you with where we are.
FYI, I, and likely you, need to leave the park by about 8am on Sunday. They close the roads after that and if you miss it you're stuck there until 2:30-3 when they open the roads again. So we'll be up early on Sunday to roll out of the campground.
Will be an early morning for sure, but on the plus side, get out to the Lake a lot earlier for a low stress 1.5 days before the race.
Are you camping or just parking your car?
