Coach P IMTX run planning...

 http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/clfYbapsV

Time to start planning my race. Bummed a bit that my 2.5 vDOT boost only has me 3 minutes faster than my usual IM run performance, but this is a great exercise to keep myself in check! image

Of course, I might have something up my sleeve for IMTX...so you'll just have to track me on race day!

  • Coach - I'm sure you already know this (you do say you have tricks up your sleeve), but for discussion purposes, a couple of thoughts, or one thought applying to several factors.

The thought is, the fitter/faster one is, the less the usual fudge factors apply. Meaning, very fit athletes can handle the heat better than those not so well prepared. The curve which Matt derived based on all those IM race results showed that, at the pointy end, the equation breaks down, and people don't lose as much time as the equation would predict due to the heat. Likewise, I suspect that the "30 seconds a mile x 6 miles" also is less for the faster runner.

FWIW, I agree that your goal of 3:10 or better on a 65-70 F day is a good one. Too bad it won't be that cool, but who knows, after the spring heat waves, you're all acclimated, and maybe you'll be running in a thunderstorm.

  • @Al, thanks for the perspective. I have heard from a few others that being 12 lbs lighter will also make managing the heat better....too bad I am giving some of that back right now. MUST FOCUS!! image
  • Coach P,

Just remember not to let the numbers get you down.  The LRP for 56.5 vdot = 7:41 and at 59 LRP = 7:28.  Even though the Vdot has gone up 2.5 points remember the gains are dinimishing.  The key is you are much faster and lighter.

I think Al has mentioned the big factor the heat.

One other thought the flatter bike course and the net downhill profile, especially from mile 90 onwards will allow for some good gains on the competition with focused power but also allow you to set up the run easier than the ride in to Lake Placid.  Keying in on nutrition in the last half of the bike and especially the final hour of the bike on paper looks easier.

Also you mentioned being 4-5 minutes faster on a open 1/2 marathon so 3' faster than your IM PB is still decent.

I know you'll execute but w/ the race so close, I am worried about your comment of giving too much back and having to FOCUS! Sounds like a recipe to over cook the last few weeks leading up to race and going in overtrained/under rested. Don't! And make sure you are eating enough to recover and fuel your WKO's. Elementary I know but sometimes we lose the forest for the trees. I'm quite guilty of this over the years!
