Giro Advantage 2 fit advice

Just got a Giro Advantage 2. I originally went with the Medium but the side pads squeezed my ears and it made them sore after 10 minutes of just wearing it around my house. So I got the Large, which is much looser. I can tighten down the Roc-Loc so it fits nice and snug and doesn't move around. It's super comfortable like this but my question is will the extra size cause any problems? Is the extra size going to diminish the aero effects at all? Full disclaimer: I failed physics in school.

  • John,

I had an Advantage 2 for a couple of seasons. Went with the Large because I was afraid I'd break off the ear flaps putting on the Medium, even though I'd prefer my aero helmet tight. Short answer to your question is yes, you're giving up a little aero benefit by having a wider dome on your head. But it's really hard to quantify, and if forced to guess, I'd say it can't be too terribly much. Maybe 5-10 seconds per 40k at worst.

That said, I did end up switching over to the Rudy Project Wingspan, which I love, and is much easier to get on your head, even at the narrower width.
  •  Thanks Mike. I think I will give the Giro a try for a few races and see how it does. That Rudy Project helmet looks super nice but probably beyond my price range right now. Appreciate the feedback

  •  @ John-

I'm looking at aerohelmets myself, initially I thought the same regarding the price and then saw the 40% team discount for rudy....this might change my thoughts

  • The Giro 2 is the only aero helmet I've found that'll fit my gigantic cranium (insert scottish accent from "so I married an axe murderer" here). The rudy L will not fit, even though I got a free one last year - I ended up sending it back.

Yeah, my head is maybe slightly large, but I think I have a "tall" head, meaning the distance from the top of my head to the bottom of my ears is long. So I had to go to a larger size so the helmet did not sit right on my ears. SO it looks even more goofy than it already did, but with the Roc-Loc, I can cinch it down and it fits very comfortably. Plus it will be super easy to get on during T1.

  • And, yes, I downloaded Bay City Rollers after this scene!

I say that line at least once a week when trying to get my son to put his clothes on.
