IM St. George Utah to become a 70.3 starting 2013

Subject says it all - details here:

I'd consider doing this as a 70.3 event.

  • yeah - I think many of us saw this coming. Along w/a new IM distance race on the West Coast/ NW region soon. For me it was the timing of the event (early spring) vs. the difficulty that kept me away.
  • Aargh...I was hoping they would keep it as an IM for the full five year contract. Don't care to do the 70.3 option. There goes a great 'safety' IM!!!
  • Hmmm ... I was counting on IM StG in 2013. I don't really want to go there for a 70.3. I do want to do an early season IM next year which is not IM CDA, so my choices are: New Zealand, South Africa, Lanzarote, Brasil, Cairns (Aus), France. I'm leaning towards Lanzarote cause (a) it has a reputation of being "hard" like St George and (b) my wife wants to go to Morocco, which is a puddle jump away. Glass half full: I get another two weeks to train.

@Pete Where and when is the new west coast/NW region IM?

No one nows though there have been lots of rumors about a number of places for years.

  • Got cha. Thx. I though it was announced and I missed it.

  • New W coast IM rumors: Bend, Tahoe, San Luis Obispo, and even buy Silverman. But all are slotted for the fall - September ? With St George decision done, this supports the rumor the decision will be made in May.

  • I think in their news brief they alluded for it to being a difficult combination of bike and run for an IM for the IM'ers. My belief is the water is historically to cold making IM'ers NOT wanting to return and others to question participating in this event. So is it a contractual obligation to at least keep an event there who knows ? Penny 4 your thought my"2 cents worth"!

There was something on ST that SLO withdrew from consideration to host an IM.

Tahoe would have really cold water too, right?

  • The thing that bums me out is that it was one NA IM race you could actually get into without planning 1+ years in advance!
  • Tahoe would be cold in early May or in September. Tahoe is really only a good option in June, July or August. Even then, if you are tall your toes can get chilly trending water. The thermocline there is really shallow. Tahoe is also really high altitude wise. SLO would have been great.
  • There is also talk of a Santa Cruz CA IM. I read a local paper article stating the city gov't was in very early analysis of the possibility. I like the SLO and Santa Cruz options.

@Al, you forgot Texas on your list!
  • that decision is a shame to go to a half...after all isnt an ironman suppose to be hard..secondly living in Las Vegs it was a very convienent none planned ironman if one wanted to do without plunking down the Mula a year in advance
  • Not surprising but the venue will still make for a great half.

People do IM's and general and specific courses in particular for all sorts of reasons. Timing, location, cost, easy, hard, whatever. This is all just a game and, trust me, no one at mile 20 of an Ironman marathon is saying "OMG this course is sooooo easy! I'm so glad I picked this race!" They all hurt, badly . And I like how the ST post has brought out all of the anonymous internet tough guys. In the end, you're riding a $$$$ bike wearing a pointy hat and spandex, with 5000 people handing you everything you need. You're not a bad ass .

In the end, this is just a game.

Seems to me a natural fit would be to move Oceanside to May and call it a full, on the same course like it was in 2000-01. I raced in 2001, date was May 19th, I think. But the 70.3 brand is very big, especially Oceanside, and I don't think they would take that race off the calendar and I doubt Camp Pendleton would be jiggy with two races.

I'm not very familiar with the bays and ocean swimming options a long the California coast so can't comment on possible locations.

  •  Let's see, Santa Cruz: Swim starts @ Maverick's, ride heads up along the coast, over Empire Grade and Bear Creek Rd, then run along the sand into town - sounds easy enough.

@ Tom - Texas is not on my wife's agenda - Southern Utah red rocks, Morocco, or Amazon adventure are for after race vacation. We spent 4 years doing the big city/sun belt thing @ IM AZ.

Count how many of them also said something along the lines of "Stupid WTC pandering to all the pussies.  I planned to do this race in 2013 because I wanted the challenge of doing the hardest course."

Well, sounds like too many of them were planning to do the race at some point but not enough were actually registering to do the race... otherwise it would still be an IM.

I was planning on taking the space shuttle to the moon someday but NASA stopped the shuttle program.

  • Best of luck to anyone doing St. George this weekend. The last BIG one....
  • The 70.3 course and other info is up here: http://www.atozion.com/ironmanstgeorge.php
  • I am very excited about St George 70.3. The race course will be absolutely spectacular and will make for a tough 70.3. I survived the IM 140.6 this year, though barely, but fell in love with the scenery along the coast (and Veyo Pies). Really looking forward to going back and having fun on what must be one of the best HIM races imaginable.
