Power meter computer selection??

Trying to make a decision on what computer to put with my PT.  Not sure if the Joule is worth the extra money (as compared to a garmin 500). I have never used power before, and was thinking real time TSS and NP would be valuable in races.  But maybe after I've used power for 6 months, I won't need it.   My first A race isn't until Vineman in July - so six months is about what I've got.  As you all know, a little extra money is OK if it helps in my A race, but I could spend it somewhere else if it won't.

  • I have the Joule on order with Rich. I currently use the Garmin 705 but look forward to the info the Joule has like TSS, IF, etc in real time. It really makes sense on hot days when you are doing long solo rides to avoid cramping/bonking in the middle of nowhere when the alpha-male in you shows up early in the ride. Also, from an EN perspective it seems important for race execution. It is a couple hundos more from what I understand.

  • TSS, NP and IF are "nice to haves" but I never really used them for anything important during a training ride or race (been using Ergomo for 3 years). I guess IF/NP could be a good check to have during a race but if you establish your pacing and stick to the plan you really shouldn't need to check up on yourself. That being said, I'm going with the Joule anyway.
