Lake Placid Training Camp and Hannah's Hope Foundation

I am taking the opportunity to raise money for Hannah's Hope Foundation through the Ironman Foundation "Your Journey, Your Cause" program. Hannah's Hope is a 501c3 charitable foundation dedicated to finding a cure for Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN). GAN is a rare degenerative neurological disease of children similar to Lou Gehrig's disease (with the whopping exception that it affects kids). It is 100% fatal. For the first time ever, a new possible therapy is being developed involving gene therapy to the spinal cord. A clinical trial is moving toward opening in December or January to try to cure this disease. Heroically, this effort has been entirely funded through Hannah's Hope without the "aid" of the federal government. It is a landmark partnership of private donors, scientists, physicians, and parents who have been able to fast track the laborious pace of medical research better than I have ever seen. Its a privilege to help this cause.

I will be racing 5 races this year to try to raise $50K for Hannah and others like her. I have pledged to match the first $10K dollar for dollar with my own money. Already Galveston is in my rear view mirror, Mooseman is looming large and then Placid, Muskoka, and finally Florida. I had hoped to go to Placid training camp with the gang this year, but unfortunately I am obligated to travel to Salt Lake City that weekend for work. But that is where you come in. We own a vacation house in Lake Placid. It is a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom house right in the village above main street. It is walk to everything. Comes with all the amenities (cable, wifi, deck, grill, kitchen, etc). The bedroom configurations are 3 with double or queen and 1 with 2-twin beds. I would like to rent each room for $250 for the weekend (or the whole house for $1K for the weekend). Basically the procedure is this. If you would like to rent then e-mail me at kevinwaltermd@mac.com. I will confirm the room is available with you and which room in the house you want. You can then go ahead and donate at my Ironman Foundation webpage at http://ironman.kintera.org/florida2012/kevinwalter

Don't want to stay, but still want to donate? Please do so! Need more motivation? Each year Hannah's Hope holds a 5K race to raise money. Last year's winner was Hannah's next door neighbor and close friend, Chris Gleason.

  • You can also learn more about Hannah's Hope through their website at

    www.hannahshopefund.org

  • Also, when you donate, the website automatically sends you a receipt for tax purposes.
  • Kevin- Cool idea! I'll send you an email.
  • Just to work out the math for everyone. The Marriott rate is $129/night+10.75% tax=$439 for camp Thurs eve to Sunday. Money goes to Marriott corp. my house =$250 for the whole weekend. No sales tax and donation tax deductible.

If you want to google the location, it's at 20 Grand View Ave, Lake Placid, NY
  • Sent you an email to see if there is still room. Love this idea you came up with!!!
  • Kevin,

    Do you still have openings?

    Thanks,

    Rob
  • I've decided to change this a little bit. I had hoped to raise money for Hannah's Hope this way (and still do), but I really don't want to feel like I'm holding friends hostage. Trying to do just a little bit of fund raising has really opened my eyes to how hard this really is and given me a great respect for those who do it well. I still cringe every time I ask someone for money.

So, the stay at the house is free. The amounts above are just suggested donations. I would love it if you gave that much (or more), but I know we all support great causes and triathlon is a freaking expensive hobby so if having a free home stay for camp makes you family finances balance better this month then go ahead by all means!

Just to put the details up again. The house is at 20 Grand View in the village. It has 4 bedrooms (3 with double/queen and 1 with 2 twins). It has 2 full bathrooms. It has wifi. It has cable. It has large decks, grill, patio furniture. It has a canoe, paddles, life preservers (though not on the water so you would need to transport to lake side). It has a TRX, a cyclops fluid trainer, a largish work area for working on your bikes. Laundry facilities, etc. It is my favorite place in the world. It kicks any Marriott's ass. It is just above main street. My daughters walk to Bluesberry bakery each morning we are there to pick up chocolate croissants for Dad.
  • Kevin, is there only room during the IMLP rally? We have friends doing the race in July and would like to come up the day before the race and stay the say after and are looking for accommodations. We are taken care of for the Rally.
  • I don't think there will be room during IM weekend. I'm racing IMLP so house is going to be full of family.

  • Just pulled the trigger! I'll see if I can get the matching $ from work.
  • Hi Kevin - Just sent you a PM re: the Training Camp weekend. Looking forward to hearing back from you.
    Cheers - Woody
