Infitnit formula suggestions

I'm in the process of ordering Infinit for the first time, and planning to use it for upcoming workout including the RRs.

Any suggestions on the best way to customize the formula for the Ironman bike leg?  I'm likely headed for a 6:30+ bike time, so I'll need a lot of calories, but at 145lbs I assume my calorie/hr will be on the low side of the scale.

Is there a "standard" formulation that EN uses?

Favorite, or least favorite flavor?

  • Brett - there is a 'standard' EN formulation. If you click on the EN logo at the bottom of the page, it will take you to it.

I used that as my baseline, but then modified it a bit. I am a very profuse sweat-producing-machine, so I set up an appt with Laurie (at Infinit) to discuss how to modify. It took a couple of tries to get it right, but I am very happy. One big BIG plus with Infinit is that if a formulation isn't working, call them and they will send you a new batch very quickly.

If you PM me your email, I will sling-shot you my forumulations.

Some people mix up their flavors ... Lemon Lime for the bike, Orange for the run. Personally I can't tolerate orange, so I have LL for both formulae. Since I normally make a 3-hr bottle for both my training rides and HIM/IM races, I dialed down the flavor quite a bit. When it is concentrated, a 'normal' flavor level was overpowering. The only downside to my modification is that if I make a 1-hr bottle, the flavor is very subtle. I can live with that.
  • Brett, recommend you read everything in the wiki on Nutrition if you haven't already done so...HUGE value of EN is all the guidance on nutrition for race day. There are some recommended ranges for calories and sodium.
From the long course Nutrition info in the wiki:
STRONGLY recommend limit of 200-250cal/hr, regardless of source, then go higher only if you need to.
    1.5-2 bottles of fluid/hr
    500-1000mg sodium per hour
Liquid nutrition, as a feed bottle of Infinit on the downtube.
Pick up second feed bottle at BSN.-

other thoughts, If you are going to concentrate the bottle to say 3 hours you are going to want to dial down the flavor to almost nothing for your infinit formula. Not sure the EN formula on the infinit website does this.

I have my formula set to 250 calories and 500mg of sodium. For me, this is the baseline. A 3 hour concentrated bottle works great. you need to practice this though. Swig of infinite followed by a swig or two of water. at 500mg of sodium the bottle is salty sweet, but tolerable. also Pay attention to the Protein level. lots of opinions on this one. right now my formula has 1g of protein. Have read that folks over the age of 40 have a tougher time handling protein during the race.

Infinit is a great product, just need to order some and practice with it based on the the EN guidance.
  • Also, check out the MUD. One scoop in a cup of coconut milk after a morning workout is so unbelievable delicious!
  • Brett-- If you PM me your email address, I'm happy to slingshot you my bike formula as well. Then you'll be able to look at a couple of different ones before you decide. I use the LL flavor and dial it way down on flavor as well. I found this is the least bad of the 3 flavors once it gets hot.

    btw, Go Steelers!

  • Why not just sign up for the personal consultation and the owner will call you to customize it for you? He's really nice and really knows his stuff. That should get you what you need or at least like 90% of the way there instead of trying to mimic others formulas.
  • Brett: I agree with Tucker. Setup a personal consultation.
