70.3 South Africa 2010

Hi all , I have just completed the largest 70.3 in the world . We had 2100 athletes . The swim was crazy even though we went off in waves . I worked very hard in hot , dry ,windy conditions to get a podium finnish . I managed to finnish 3rd in my age group only 2min behind the 2nd lady . I am pleased as I have a lot of new strong ladies that have moved up . My bike was strong under 3 hours but I found the run very hot and was slower on the run than last year . Managed 2hrs compared to 1hr50 . When I finnished I had terrible cramps in my legs and feet . Has any one else experienced this and do you think salt tablets would help ?  I was dehydrated even though I drank  at every station and kept cool with the sponges .

Well the end to my day was eating somthing bad at prize giving ,  getting very sick and on a drip in hospital   Lucky we seem to forget the bad bits by the time our next challenge comes around .

  • congrats, would love to see pics and hear more! congrats on 3rd place too. sorry about the drip, yes it does sound like you were dehydrated! m
  • GREAT RACE! Congrats on getting it done on a tough day. Could well be that you weren't getting in enough electrolytes, as lower extremity cramping (entire) vs just a calf, etc., lends itself to a hydration not pacing diagnosis. Tell us what you were fuelling with!

  • Wow- Congratulations! That sounds like a really cool race. I'd love to see some pics!
  • Congrats on a gut-it-out success!

  • Hi Patrick , I drank two bottles of Infinit and 3 GU's on the bike . On the run I had 2 more Gu's and water at every stop . I drank coke twice I think . They handed out power aid on the run , but I never used it . I proberly need to learn to take in more ? Do you think I might need something more solid for Iron man or must I drink more electrolytes ?

  • NICE WORK!!! Sounds like an amazing day....for the highs and the lows! Sorry to hear about the sickness part. It is good though that this may serve as a chance to learn something about your nutrition approach (either in what to do or what NOT to do). That will be really helpful for IM.

    Congrats!

Oh, and BTW, SA is on my list of places to visit someday. I hear phenomenal things and my interest is peaked!
  • I plan a long ride tomorrow to test different nutritional options  . The races are a good practice run  for us . It would be great to have more EN people over here as at the moment I am the only member although I have seen advertising for EN on our Iron Man web site . Lets hope more people join me .

  • Great job TIna. I'm sorry you had GI issues.

My sister lives in Kenya. One of these days I'm going to do an event in Africa. The three weeks that I spent in Africa were some of the best times of my life.
  • Tina- Congratulations on the podium finish! That is huge! Where are the pics?

As for nutrition- how many calories were you taking in with those 2 bottles of Infinit? You also might consider Infinit for the run in concentrated form. More fluid and electrolytes sounds like the main issue.
  • Congrats on a great race, Tina!
How many mg of sodium were you taking an hour?
  • Thank you all for the support . I think I definitely needed more electrolytes . I read you should write down your eating and hydration plan and stick to  . I have been taking a few bottles and some GU without planning my nutrition properly . I have just ordered more Infinit and will try it concentrated on my brick runs . I see now that nutrition can make or break our big day .

As for the pics , I am having trouble loading them ! Can anyone help me ? There must be an easy way to do it ?
