Garmin not detecting Powertap G3

Everything was working fine before I installed the wheelbuilder disc on the rear of my Speed Concept with powertap G3.  I had power no problem.  Tonight I put the disc cover on, now the Garmin can not detect the powertap.  Strange, the cadence sensor is detected.  Any thoughts?

  • This can definitely happen once the disc cover is installed. What I've done in the past is take the LYC/Garmin, etc. and hold it right next to the rear wheel hub while it is spinning. I either do this when the bike is on the trainer (so I can keep the wheel moving without having to hold the bike) or have someone lift the bike and just keep doing a 1/2 revolution with the cranks to keep the wheel spinning.  Once is recognizes it, you'll get the signal even when you move the Garmin to your handle bars.

  •  Wow, thanks. That worked.  Never would have thought of that.

    Thanks again.

  •  I use a garmin 310xt and run a power tap. I have problems with the power data "drifting"....The power data drops to very low numbers and stays there for many miles, typically until I turn garmin off or reset. It's ok training, but not when I am racing. Does anyone else experience this or havea solution?

  • @Keith/Ken - never had problems with my wheelcover causing power data to not be transmitted. Now I know what to do if it happens. Thanks!

@Cindy - been using a 310xt / Powertap combo for a year and a half now and I have never had that situation.
  •  Thanks. It's been crazy. Just got a replacement power tap on race wheels because we couldn't figure it out, but training wheels are doing it now, too. Thanks for the info though! I will keep messing with it!
