Dissapointing Mini Race Rehersal

So I road the Rev3 Quassy Oly course today. (This year will be my third time doing the race... I don't know why- I hate hills!)  Anyway, it took me 2:09 for 25.5 mi. (2885ft. of climbling)  My past best for the course was about 1:57.  This is my first year training with power (3rd tri season) so not that I expected miracles, but I was hoping I get 10 minutes OFF the time, not ON it!  I know I can't judge my improvement on one ride, but I can't help but see this a good indicator, no?

Here are some of my thoughts and wanted to get the team's input on....The IF for the entire ride was .924.  I'd say the first 1/2-2/3 was close to 100%.  Did I start out too hard?  The last 4-5mi are uphill and killed me.  I was getting hungry towards the end (just had 1 bottle w/ 2 scoops of Accelerade for the ride)  For race I will plan on having a GU w/ extra caffeine maybe mile 15-ish.

Just trying to find some rationale for the lack of improvement.  Due to weather, this is probably only my 4th or 5th outdoor ride this season.  I def. need to work on hills and will plan on doing hill repeats for all future VO2 bike WKOs.  Anything else I can do w/ 4 weeks til race day?

Thanks!

  • @Kim, it's all execution. Yes, you started too hard. Even in an OLY, the first 5-10 minutes need to be easy/settling in. Then you dial up to 90-95% and sit there, careful not to exceed your FTP number unless it means not falling over on a hill. You will need to eat more for sure, esp if you want to run after. Hard to compare #s as you had other folks to draft off of / pass on race day and you weren't racing with power (so maybe you murdalized yourself)....focus on the fuel and right target pacing and you'll be okay!
