Big Bike Week vs Big Tri Week

Not sure how to incorporate these into my plan.

According to the wiki, both should occur within 12 weeks of the race to get max benefits, and no later than 6 weeks from the race to avoid fatigue.  That said, wherever I schedule them, they will be back-to-back with either a Big Training Day or a RR.  Or is that not a problem? Can the BBW and BTW be back-to-back?

Wk 9

Wk 10

Wk 11 Big Training Day #2

Wk 12  Testing week

Wk 13

Wk 14  RR#1

Wk 15

Wk 16

Wk 17  RR#2

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

  •  My understanding and two cents....Your supposed to do one or the other and certainly not back to back........Maybe do a Big  Tri week ending with your  Big Training Day week 11 (wed-Sat)....then recover week 12-  back up your testing by 1 week...test week 13....then do a week 14 as scheduled...ending with RR#1...then do a big week second half of wk15 (Wed or Thurs-Sun) ..

To make my point...Big Bike Week is usually done early season training (ie. stuck into OS) to break out or up to a new level...Big Tri Week is done in Race Prep to drive home your fitness...From the Wiki Big Bike Week Article..."As an example, in training for IMUSA, Patrick typically uses a cycling week in February and a triathlon week in early June to prepare. "

Also...Personally I would skip the testing myself. You tested at the beginning of the race prep phase...and  already working in the zones your gonna race in......you don't need to retest if training is going properly.

  • Thanks for the advice.  The coaches advised me to add a BBW into my IM training...mainly because I need a LOT of help on the bike.  I agree about possibly skipping the testing.  I'm at the very bottom end of my zones and don't forsee raising my FTP in the next few wks.

I'm leaning towards just doing the BBW (b/c I really could use it), but it would be great to get a BTW in there too somehow...

  • @Mac, everyone WANTS to do it all, but few can. Witness Coach P, who is doing is 17th IM entering his 2nd decade of the sport, gets tired after 4 big days. image And he's not doig anything back to back. So you can do that, but that would be your season and we could scratch all the pretty little races off your signature. image So, instead I suggest that you do a BBW and that's it. Ideally you would do it in Week 11, and drop the big training day....use the plan as listed in the training plan tool based on your ability OR post one and we'll review it!
  • Hey Mac,

I presume you're planning this out for Full Vineman? I did my BBW in late March, and I'll probably do my BTW across Memorial Day weekend (IM week 12). I'll probably end up bumping the scheduled big day up a week, or just scratch it depending how I feel. image
  • Coach P, thanks for the input...that's what I'll do!

Anson...yes, Vineman!  That's a good point about using Memorial Day.  Might switch up my weeks as well and do the BBW then. Thanks!
