Cancelling 70.3 Prior to IMLP

I'm scheduled to compete in Kinetic HIM this weekend (5/12/2012).  I've run into the family vs. triathlon training/racing dilemma, as many of us certainly have in the past -- and it may cause me to miss the Kinetic HIM this weekend.  I'm a little worried b/c I wanted to use Kinetic as a baseline to see where I'm at in my prep for IMLP on July 22nd.  I have also never done a 70.3 before (lots of Olympics, but never a 70.3) and wanted to do a long race prior to IMLP.  I wanted to get advice from all of you out there about dropping this weekend's HIM -- and basically going into IMLP without ever having done a 70.3 race?

I have been doing the HIM training plan for several weeks now very religiously, and was pretty consistent through about 20 weeks of the OS.  One of my workouts a couple weekends ago was 56 mile tt bike, followed by 60 minute run.  I felt really good at the end of the run -- a slight bit of cramping, but that was simply b/c I was not drinking enough on the bike.  I also know that as soon as I load the IM Plan, I think I have a 60 minute swim, 4 hour bike, and 1 hour run workout looming the first Saturday of my IM plan (May 19th maybe).  I'm doing a sprint tri (C race) on May 20th and am attending the IMLP training camp from June 7-10th as well.  So, I have lots of big/long training coming, but no actual 70.3 (or longer race) prior to IMLP.

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts on if I should do Kinetic this weekend and what impact not doing it would have on IMLP this summer.  Thanks!

  • @Michael - the HIM and IM races are completely different animals. As CoachR says, there is no one at the IM check-in looking to see if you have done a Half. If you follow the EN training plans, you *will* be ready for IMLP.

If you want to race for the sake of racing, then GO FOR IT. If you do not do the Kinetic HIM, it will in no way affect your performance at IMLP.
  • @ Michael - Don't worry about missing the HIM race if if dosn't work for your family.  Sounds like you are in good shape from a successful OS and the EN IM plan will get you ready to go the distance.  FWIW, I jumped from doing Olympics to an IM, skipping the HIM distance.  No big deal to skip the HIM race distance.  Just be sure to follow the EN IM plan and get those long rides, runs and swims in so you can get the proper pacing and nutrution plan.   Those are two of the big differences from the olys - you gotta be able to keep re-fueling yourself without getting sick, and that takes some practice so you got no surprises on IM day.   Smart decision to go to the IMLP training camp as you'll learn alot about this there.  Good luck.
