Plan change advice

I was scheduled to do the Gulf Coast HIM this Saturday, but as a result of the flu that I got last week, I just see no way that I'll be able to compete Saturday.  I can barely stay awake past 5:00 as it is now.  So, now I need to shift my focus towards the rest of the year.  I'm doing IMFL, which is a long way away.  I believe June 16 is 20 weeks.  I'm also planning on doing Augusta HIM.  Other than that, I'm signed up for an olympic on June 2 and then just a few sprints here and there throughout the summer.

Questions:

1.  What should I be doing between now and June 16, keeping in mind that I theoretically should've peaked for a HIM this weekend?

2.  Should I switch to the IM Plan 20 weeks out from Florida?

Thanks, Branan

  • Augusta is in September, more than 12 weeks or so after your Oly.
FL is about 9 weeks after Augusta

If I were you, I'd get well for the next several days, switch to a "get fast" or "short course" plan through the Oly. No need to kill yourself with distance in the coming month when you're going all the way into November!

After the Oly, I'd switch to training for the half, straight up. You can taper a bit less and maybe add a little extra mileage in the weeks 2-4 weeks from the race if you want...but the big difference between the HIM and IM plans is really the length of the weekend rides and the peak length of the run. The peak run doesn't need to be done 25 weeks out, so no need to change anything there. You can do somewhat longer rides if you want right before your HIM taper.

Then after the HIM, take the weekdays more or less off and the first weekend back into the IM plan a little easy, and you should be good to go!
  • I'd probably drop into the get faster plans and do some cool shit. Centuries, 5-10ks, single sport blocks. A 20wk IM plan just has zero interest to me especially over a full summer. I'd jump into a 12 week IM in August and treat Augusta as a B or C race.

William, it looks like FL is 5 weeks after Augusta.  Would you change your advice based upon that?

  • Having just done a 20 week IM plan and given your season ahead, MY thoughts would be:

Use the 'get faster' stuff until 12 weeks out from Augusta. Then drop into that 12 week plan and add an early big bike week and a big tri week in place of the 20 week IM plan. That 20 weeks is just long! With those two big weeks, the 12 week IM plan is plenty.

Get well, sorry to hear you've been sick bud.
  • What Stephen said. That's exactly how I've been building Season Plans for the team.

Stephen, I'm setting up a filter in Gmail to forward all of the Season Planning Surveys to you, with a screencast to show you how to use the excel sheet I use, etc. Thanks!

  • So Rich and Stephen I guess, what do you propose Branan does after Augusta? You suggest a full IM plan to build for a HIM and then what does he do for the next 5 weeks?  As IMFL is obviously the focus of his year, not Augusta 70.3.

  • I think I'll do the short course plan until June 30ish, which will take me through my oly and a couple sprints. Then I'll switch to the IM plan for prep for Augusta and Florida. Obviously my focus is on Florida and I'm literally just going to train right through Augusta. Even after switching to the IM plan, I won't "get serious" until 12 weeks out and will still race sprints etc as I feel throughout the summer. Sound good?
  • The bread and butter of my IM prep this time around was the two big tri weeks I did. I would put one early in the training cycle, like when you switch to the IM plan, and then another one at maybe 6-8 weeks out. That REALLY boosted my fitness and helped me dial back in to that 'go long/all day' pace that I NEVER used at any other time during my EN training.

When you do the big weeks, try to get away too. They are daunting enough by themselves, without family responsibilities. I did my first while my wife and child were out of town and it went significantly better than the second when they weren't because all I did for 4-5 days was eat, sleep, train, and recover. It was a huge benefit to have that 'me time'.

Good luck bud. See you at some races hopefully. Let me know when that Gator Oly is going on down your way so I can put it in my schedule!
  • Sorry, calendar error. Yes, I agree that just the last 4-5 weeks is probably too short to be in the IM plan. I had misread the calendar and I had intended to mean something like what Stephen said, thinking the gap was bigger between the half and full. 12 weeks IM with the HIM as an event within it makes sense. Sorry.
