  • Right now, I've got a lot of The Black Keys, the Black Ghosts and The Bravery.
  • Florence and the Machine has been great for running and swimming (SwiMP3 player).
  • It's hard for me to admit this, but the "electric cardio radio" channel on Pandora has been great for long intervals
  •  Ahh, I always end up discovering new, cool music on Pandora. I would say my tastes are pretty broad. Van Halen, Royksopp, Moby...Ellie Goulding, Katy Perry...

I've also taken a recent liking to Korean pop idol groups (Girls Generation, Brown Eyed Girls, BoA, etc.) I have no shame.

  • Odd man out here..... I never listen to music training or racing. If I am in the pain cave on the DeadMill or Drainer I'll watch action-adventure movies but never been much of a music guy. Good thing too cause I have issues with wearing earbuds or headphones.

My best run environment is outside, in the dark, by myself, on a paved road, and no traffic, and no people. Like I said, the odd man out.......

I listen to my breathing, HR and footstike mostly.

OK.... going back to my cave now.....
  • Steve - I am with you. No music. Maybe when I'm on the drainer I'll turn the stero on - and then its music w/no lyrics - probably due to my classical music piano upbringing.

I like to hear my body. Just me and my thoughts. Training is the time to unplug from everything. Dealing with another gadget while training is just too much of a pain.

Note, the first car I owned had no radio - and I had that car for 150k miles !
  • I've become a fan of Pandora as well. But lately I've been doing my run/walk workouts (which are more walk than run right now) while listening to IMTalk, Legends of Triathlon, and Real Peloton podcasts.
  • I've got a bunch of stuff by Rise Against and The Offspring among others. Their stuff really gets me going.
  • I started today's swim with Vanessa Mae's Toccata and Fugue Techno Mix, which never fails to get me going. Eased into some Beastie Boys for old time's sake and ended up with Flogging Molly and X, Live at the Whisky-A-Go-Go. My tastes run a little eclectic...

  • Built stations on Pandora based on DJ Baby Anne and the Warp Brothers (thats hard to admit out loud!). Another based on Rage Against the Machine. I alternate regularly between those during runs and on the trainer.
  • I used to train with whatever playlist that got thrown together, but after a couple close calls while running and biking I have learned to 'train as you fight' and put down the iPod. However, on the trainer I tend to use the Sufferfest videos.
  • I listen to Sirius satellite radio on my iPhone. Generally, it is Howard Stern. But, I have been listening to the Foo Fighters a lot and once in a while the Two Johns cycling related pod cast. Before that, it was the Coach RandP podcasts, but I have basically heard them all now..... For some reason I enjoy listening to people speak who are not gasping for breath.....
  • When running I like listening to non-sports-related podcasts: How Stuff Works, This American Life, stuff like that, but usually for my non-hard runs. That is, I don't have a problem running very hard without music.

On the bike I like to ride with some Pandora stations but only when I'm riding solo (not very often these days) and since I do a lot of climbing I lose reception very soon into the ride.

How do you ride safely while listening to music? Also, doesn't the battery drain pretty quickly with Pandora (I'm assuming you're using an iPhone?).
